The Hub nut is an OEM part for GE washing machines, designed to securely fasten the tub assembly to the drive system of the washer. This component is crucial for the stability and operation of the washing machine's drum, ensuring that it remains properly aligned and attached during the vigorous motion of the wash cycles.
Per the manufacturer due to the high torgue on the hub nut an impact wrench should be used to remove and replace the hub nut. It also rquires a 90 ft lb torque limiting extension WX05X10028 and a 1 5/16th impact socket WX05X10022. You can order these through the links or use ones you already have. WARNING: The 90 ft lb torque limiting extension must be used when removing or installing the hub nut to prevent damage to the hub nut and transmission due to over torquing with the impact wrench. Causes of these issues can range from natural wear and tear over time to improper installation or overloading of the washer, which can exert undue stress on the Nut Hub and other related components. Ensuring that the Nut Hub is in good condition and properly tightened is essential for the longevity and proper function of your GE washing machine. Symptoms of a faulty Hub nut include:

Using repair help suggestions from other users and youtube, I narrowed it down to the transmission (part #320) mainly because it was a metal-to-metal noise. The parts came in one day, thank you AppliancePartsPros.com. I installed the transmission but the noise was still there. Unfortunately, I didn't investigate enough and found a youtube video that suggested it could be the mode shifter (part #325) and that's what it was.
