The Spring is an OEM part for Whirlpool refrigerators. It is a small but important internal part that applies pressure to dispense cubed or crushed ice from the refrigerator door. The spring is located within the ice dispenser mechanism and works with a lever to push ice out through the dispenser chute upon activation.
Causes of a bad spring can include wear and tear over time, putting undue pressure on the dispenser by jamming items into the chute, or damage from excessive force applied during dispensing.

The problem was that the motor coupler & shaft had a tiny bit of rust at their union. With the weight of the ice bin it rusted in the lowest position. This didn't allow the motor coupler to float on the shaft. There is a spring inside the shaft that pushes up on the motor coupler keeping it engaged in the ice bin coupler above. Noticed that the ice level LED was off then removed the ice maker and checked voltage into the ice maker module (L n' V) and didn't get power. Checked continuity on the black wire (fuse) and found it ok. Checked the parts at AppliancePartsPros.com and ordered them. Came back once got the parts. Remove and replaced the auger motor, shaft seal, and the chute seal. No problem. However, the causing failure was to broken wire on the bottom of the freezer door. Loom and blue wire were cut, due to being pinched. I had current to start with and the auger worked three times then quit. That's when I really had to start searching . Fun. Read more
