We looked around on the internet to see if others had the same problem. It appeared that about 95% of the time it was the control panel. There was a YouTube of the repair that we watched. Wax motor for detergent/rinse-aid dispenser.
Took door off, saw that dispenser linkage was ok, I could open and close by hand, so figured the wax motor or the wiring to it were most likely the problem. I took off the wax motor ( actuator) and ran 120 volts to it via jumper wires, and it did not move at all, so figured good chance that was the problem.
