Figured it was either the capacitor and/or motor. Ordered both parts to be sure. tried changing the capacitor first; same problem. Replaced the motor (leaving the new capacitor in place). Unit now works fine. Overall an easy fix once you get the washer out and tip it on its side or top to get access to the motor area.

After watching an on-line video showing how to replace the front panel of the dishwasher, I put together the right tools (only needed a Torx #T15 star-shaped bit screwdriver) and -- with my wife's help to hold the panel tight to the door -- had the job done in about 10 minutes total. The plastic latch handle on my son & daughter-in-law's dishwasher. While taking off the control panel to look at the problem, I found out that a couple of the post holes in the control panel were broken.
If you need to do this, you'll need a small Allen wrench to remove the top 6 screws from the inside of the door and a screwdriver or other tool to help pop some of the plastic clips on the door latch bracket and control board cover. Pull out the control board and disconnect the ribbon cable...
