Do-It-Yourself Stories from Customers like You Both the freezer and refrigerator stopped cooling   Raymond O. • Kerrville , TX • April 11, 2015

I have a Kitchen Aid side by side refrigerator/freezer which is 8 years old. One day it just stopped cooling. At first I was just going to junk it and purchase a new one. However, I took off the lower back cover and noticed the compressor was not running. I knew from experience that these compressors need a starter capacitor and relay and it is not uncommon for these parts to fail. I looked on the Internet for a video which showed how to remove the parts. I also found a video which showed how... Read more

Do-It-Yourself Stories from Customers like You Intermittent condenser fan noise leading me to believe fan bearing failure imminent   Robert M. • Munroe Falls , OH • April 22, 2021

Unplugged refrigerator and removed access panel from back of fridge. Have had this panel off many times for dust removal. Panel is a cheap piece of glorified cardboard on this Whirlpool model, which is a shame given that it was a $1000 refrigerator. Fan motor is mounted on stamped sheet metal bracket which I removed from cabinet with old fan attached to it. Metal bracket held in place by 4 1/4 inch hex head sheet metal screws. Two outermost screws can be removed with nut driver but access to... Read more

Well with a lot of help from the world wide web and my friends from AppliancePartsPros.com, I was able to determine the source of the problem, which was the defrost thermostat. However, due to the disassembly involved to get to it, I decide to also change a couple of other parts involved in the defrost process, which are also located in the same compartment as the defrost thermostat. Do-It-Yourself Stories from Customers like You Leaking water filter housing   Ron Y. • Millsboro , DE • July 24, 2015

It's bit of a chore in that on my Whirlpool Refrig you need to remove the grill on bottom front and the Utility Panel on bottom rear. Then unscrew the original filter housing and pull it out through the back of utility opening. Remove the two water hoses and put them into new filter house. Reverse the disassembly process to reinstall new filter housing. I'm old and slow so the process took me about 45 minutes. (Note: Unplug electric and turn off water inlet before starting.) Read more
