The burner and gas valve assembly is a complete assembly that contains the burner that distributes the gas in a way that creates an even flame allowing for heat to be distributed properly to perform the dryer's essential functions. If the dryer is no longer drying clothes effectively, or heating properly, then it might be time for it to be replaced. Luckily repairing a gas valve assembly is an easy fix.To replace the burner and gas valve assembly, begin by shutting off power to the appliance. Next, pull the dryer away from the wall to gain access to the back panel. Remove the back panel and locate the gas valve assembly. Remove the mounting screws that hold it in place. After removing the screws use both hands to pull and release the old valve assembly. Set it off to the side and proceed to install the new one by refastening the screws that hold it in place.This replacement part is sold individually and is compatible with Whirlpool, Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Sears/Kenmore brand washers.

Frigidaire Gallery gas dryer from maybe 15 years ago. Based on the fact the the smell was only in the dryer, I concluded it must be the gas valve failing to completely seal when closed.
