John T Merrimac , MA January 14, 2019 Appliance: Whirlpool Microwave, Hood WMH53520CS5 Open/close door error message Whirlpool WMH53520CS 5 microwave would not turn on Replaced lower door interlock bracket, cam(which was redesigned), spring(I believe this was the problem) and switch. When the door opens the spring moves the cam which releases the switch"on" Button which turns on the interior light when you close the door, the latch which protrudes out from door pushes into the cam which rotates to turn off the light switch and enables operation of the microwave. Old design cam would push past the light switch and the weakened spring would not push it back towards the door to enable operation. In terms of fix. Remove top plastic vent cover over the door(2 screws). Remove control panel with one screw on top, lift up and pull out and turn to the side at 90%.(you can have somebody hold or support and duct tape or unplug(delicate). Remove interlock piece with #10 star screwdriver, pull out and remove spring. If old style design cam. Replace the interlock piece, cam and spring. Otherwise replacing the spring should do the trick.(MAKE SURE YOU UNPLUG MICROWAVE 1st).Put Back together and you should be good to .15 Minutes to do entire operation. Roger F Clinton , IL June 19, 2015 Appliance: Model GH7208XRS-1 WHIRLPOOL MICROWAVE Microwave would not start and interior light stayed on continuously even with door closed I replaced the two door switch interlocks and cam-plates which appeared to be worn. Before ordering the parts, I did a continuity check on the three door switches and determined that they were OK. While I was replacing the interlocks and cam-plates, I discovered that a piece on one of the cam-plates had broken off and was not making proper contact with the door switch when the door was closed.
