Amana Dryer Heating Element

After 22 years my Kenmore (Whirlpool) dryer stopped getting hot. So I went ahead and reviewed the videos and figured I could repair it myself. I am not an electrician, just a housewife with limited funds and a desire to DIY. Watched video. Took dryer apart to get to heating element and sensors. In process found alot of lint had escaped into inner dryer and had a thick coating over heating element. I cleaned out most lint and pulled apart lint trap on front and cleaned out as much accumulated lint as possible. I then removed the heating element (very simple, three screws in a support bracket) and found it was broke in one spot.(wire - element severed). First ran the built-in diagnostic tests. Got error code indicating that the inlet thermistor was open. Removed lower access panel and did continuity checks on the inlet thermistor, thermal cutoff and heating element. Even doing these checks is very difficult on this model due to the location of these parts and the limited access through the so-called access panel. The heating element had a break in the heater coils, so I replaced it with a new one from Appliance Parts Pros. I also replaced the thermal fusible link and thermostat switch because they were so cheap it just made sense to go ahead and do it while I was in there. I also cleaned every nook & cranny in the dryer, then cleaned out the vent piping- which was about 100% clogged. I had to pop the lid up from the front with a screw driver, and behind the element was a metal piece, a heat shield, that had two screws that had to be removed from the back. The little part with the blue round tag (part of the kit that came with the element) was easily removed with one screw. Likewise, the element had a single longer screw holding it in on the right, and on the left a little rod was sticking through a hole in the metal, and you can merely move it to the side and up the slot,... I found the assembly with heater element, thermostat, and the thermal fuse already assembled (cheaper than finding what part was bad and ordering that one part). unplugged dryer, pulled it out and removed the dryer exhaust tube, the top and front. The harness was a little short so I wasnt able to pull the whole heater assembly out before disconnecting. We got the heater core kit. Unplug, undo two screws and pulled old one out. Looking at the old one, put the new one together and then mounted it back in place. Turned on dryer but no heat so unplugged it, tapped on elements, plugged back in and it worked. Not to hard. Read more

PLEASE UNPLUG DRYER FIRST. This was my first attempt at trying to fix my dryer (Maytag SDE515DAYW). Order the element kit Part Number AP4046564. The installation was easier than I thought. Just removed the two front panels and I was able to reach the back of the dryer, under the drum (this is where the heat element was located), disconnected the wires (took pictures first) and removed the two screws that held the heat element.
