How to Troubleshoot & Replace Whirlpool AP6012946 / WP8533953 Screw

Called Appliance Parts Pros and again they nailed the problem on the head-replaced hub under agitator-machine now works fine-they have helped me repair 3 different appliances in my home. 

1 . I ran the washer to see what was wrong with it . 2 Unplugged the washer from 120 Volt Plug. 3 Removed softer dispenser by pulling up 4. Removed the bolt holding the agitator. 5 . Pulled out agitator. 6 Removed all screens Holding drive hub and clip. 7 . Replaced and put everything back .8 Ran a test run. 9 . Also replaced the shift actuator. 

I ordered the drive clutch, the drive hub, and replaced both of them. Only needed the hub, but since I had it apart I went ahead and did both anyhow. The videos were a great help in getting these repairs done. Having them simplifies the repair process. The parts went in without an issue. A $100 fix is better than spending a $1000 on a new washer. Videos were a big help, parts were delivered quickly and they were the right parts. The last time I had to repair an appliance Sears parts centers were still in business. With the videos, this service was as seemless and efficient as Sears was. In fact it was better due to the access of the videos. Minus the wait for parts. Even then I didn’t have to leave the house. Previously 2 years had a repairman fixed the same issue. He was very knowledgeable and I watched him fix it. I did the same this time without a service call or a markup on the parts. Was an easy fix. Thank you for the parts availability and your videos. 

We ordered a kit from another supplier. Should have got them here. I WILL if there is a next time. Well, it is a pretty involved adventure I have to say. But, AppliancePartsPros.com had an excellent video that covered everything I needed to know. Since I had been through this 2 years ago, I was somewhat familiar with the procedure. So watching it again was very helpful. It made the job only a 3-hour business for me. Even though it is not needed, I was blessed to be able to use a forklift to have better access to the bottom as you need to alternately work from both the top and bottom sides to accomplish the repair. In the end, the last bolt, the one that holds the agitator, was ruined by defective threads in the previous shift I installed. Installed new Gear Case/Transmission, Drive Clutch, Drive Hub Kit, 6 drive hub kit screws, Shift Actuator, Washplate, wash plate bolt and drive belt. Second time in three years that the gear case shaft splines wore out. I’ve actually been babying the washer for the past year until it finally said no more than 5 days ago. 

I replaced the drive gear again. I replaced the gear back in the summer, but apparently, the screws had backed out a little and it was enough to make the drive shaft chew up the gear. Going forward I'm going to periodically check the screws and if they start backing out again I may put some blue Loctite on them. I can't understand why plastic drive gears are used in a high efficiency washing machine. 

Googled the issue and isolated it down to some bad gears. Looked up the parts on your site and ordered them. When the parts came in I replaced the broken parts and now the washer works. The worst part was the screws and bolt were stuck due to fabric softener residue. Once I had the thing apart I brushed off the surfaces with a copper brush to remove the built up residue. Reassembly was therefore much easier. 

When it was determined (thanks to the pros at Appliance Parts Pros.com) that the problem was indeed bad drive shaft bearings, I then viewed the video available on the their website and ordered the necessary parts. The repair went somewhat according to plan but not without a few hick ups, for example, when the old drive shaft would not release from the bearings by tapping on them with a hammer I had to improvise by creating a drive shaft puller which worked just fine, otherwise the project went very well. The washing machine is back in operation and during the spin cycle it is factory quite.
