How to Troubleshoot & Replace Whirlpool AP6005965 / WP2180226 Control Bracket

The bracket was broken where the water switch is mounted. New bracket fit perfect, repair was pretty simple. 

When I searched online describing my problem, I was taken to the AppliancePartsPros.com website. I knew the switch that controls the water spots worked when I held it steady in place. So, the problem was identified on the website as the Bracket which I ordered for approximately $15 and shipping was $6. The site included a video on how to remove the old bracket and install the new. The part arrived in three days as predicted and, after watching the video several times, I was able to complete repairs within 45 minutes. Since this was during the coronavirus "stay at home" order we were delighted to have our filtered water source repaired without needing a "technician " to come to our house. Once I realized what the problem was (three of the four posts/clips that hold the water dispenser microswitch had snapped off) and that I needed to replace the entire mounting bracket for both switches, the process was easy. Found the part on AppliancePartsPros.com using the model number of my frig, ordered the part online, waited for the part (I'm cheap), watch the video and install the part when it arrived. Took about 10 minutes. Easy peasy! 

The repair videos on the AppliancePartsPros.com site gave step by step instructions on how to remove the cover, identify the defective part and remove and replace the defective part. It was the bracket behind the front panel that held the microswitch. A plastic part that looks to be designed to deteriorate and break over time. Took about 15 minutes from start to finish. All I used was a screwdriver and a plastic credit card that protected the front panel from scratches or cracking. The ice dispenser had been intermittently defective for years. It was very satisfying to have it working as good as new. WP2180226 (AP6005965) 

The plastic housing holding the switch for the water dispenser was broke. Swapped out the housing, a $15 part. Now it works great. 

I ordered the parts (microswitch/bracket) and installed them according to your very detailed you tube tutor.

After changing the filter, the valve, the switch and the bracket. It came to be the face panel, controls all the items water, ice and all. The only problem is the new face panel is black, not white which that's the color of my refrigerator is white. So I guess I will paint it to match my refrigerator. When I ordered the part it did not give a color option. 

I Google'd my refrigerator model number and the words "water dispenser not working" and found the Appliance Parts Pros web page covering that problem. The page contains some excellent videos and after disassembly of the dispenser I found broken bracket pieces. The new part was delivered quickly and I was back in business in no time!
