How to Troubleshoot & Replace Whirlpool AP6012058 / WP8205451 Door Latch Bracket

Your reprensentative recommended replacement door latch bracket. Opened microwave by removing top. Easily swapped out bracket. Entire process took less than 20 minutes. I did need a special security screw bit/tip to remove screws for back panel. Thanks for everything!! Saved me hundreds on a microwave. 

I removed the cover and discovered the broken part. Next I went to the internet to find a parts manual and to identify the replacement part. I ordered it from AppliancePartsPros.com and the part arrived in two days. The door latch bracket was snapped into place and the cover was put back on. Repair done! 

I removed the outer cabinet using Phillips and Torx drivers, found the broken piece, and ordered it. Related online stories nicely described the process I thought was needed. The part arrived in 2 days, the repair took about 5 minutes. I opened the door from inside by pushing up on the lower latch, placed the long stem of the new part into the appropriate slot, put the peg in the inner mount first, then carefully pressed outward a SMALL amount on the outer mount and pushed the new bracket into place. Probably saved $100-200. NOTE: Fishing line tied to upper latch, mentioned elsewhere, lets you open/close the door until fixed, but the magnetron won't operate because a safety microswitch must be depressed by the stem on this part when the door closes. 

I unplugged the microwave and took off a couple of screws and security screws to access the inside panel. Noticed the door latch bracket was broken.....replaced it and put it back together. All in all took about 15 minutes and the problem was fixed! 

Ordered the part from Appliance parts pros. The price for the part was reasonable and the repair was very easy. The only real issue is that you need a security torx bit to remove the housing from the microwave. Other than that a #2 phillips screwdriver is all you need to do this job. 

First, I ordered new door latch switches, since I hadn't seen any broken pieces of the door latch bracket. When I received the new door latch switches, I tested the existing ones and they tested good. (Should have tested them before I ordered the new ones.) When I was digging around, I found a small piece ( the inside pivot) inside under the door latch bracket. I then returned (for credit) the door latch switches. and ordered the new door latch bracket. To install it, I first inserted the bracket into the switch mechanism (there was a small red button there that opens the door)then I inserted the inside pivot (Pin) and lastly, inserted the outside pivot (pin). To get that pin in, I had to pry it in with a small scewdriver. This took a few tries. then I plugged it in and IT WORKED!! To get the external screws off required a star bit with a hole in the center. 

We went online and ordered the replacement part. It came the very next day. It was the right part. Although $17 seemed expensive for a smalll plastic part, it saved the life of a $500 microwave that was unusable without it. Very thankful we were able to avoid a $150 service call plus repair costs & very thankful we did not have to ditch the expensive microwave. 

I bought the door latch bracket from appliance parts pro, and again they delivered the very next day. I pulled the cover off of the unit and found the broken latch, just replaced it with the new one, very simple. 

Opened up the housing to see that the door latch bracket had broken. I replaced this with the new part I ordered. 

Replaced the door latch bracket on the microwave. The hardest part of the of the repair was getting the correct security torx bits from the hardware store and the removal of the microwave from the built-in cabinet.
