How to Troubleshoot & Replace Whirlpool AP6837573 / 388253A Neutral Asy Pack

With the help of the videos.... really made it easy and much better than the book----(which Shawn also got for me, and I can refer to if I cant access "Matt" on the video)....took all of 15 minutes once I had everything ready as the video said...and it worked just like he said Yea!!!! He made it so simple, my cat could've done it if she had hands... 

Replaced neutral assembly pack shaft seal and thrust bearing works like new 

After checking coupler, clutch and other parts, I rebuilt the transmission using neutral assembly pack. The repair is straightforward but messy since the transmission is full of gear oil (I used new 80-90w oil after cleaning out the transmission with solvent). Don't forget blue silicone for the transmission case to prevent oil from leaking. 

Replaced with new parts for the neutral drive in the transmission . Remove assembly from washing machine (20 minutes). Disassemble transmission and replace parts (1hour). Reinstall in washer and test. 

The clutch was the essential fix, and although the transmission was sound, went ahead and changed the neutral pak, with fresh, gear oil. 

Clutch , Trans rebuild, & coupler 

I pulled the transmission and took the top cover off and used the video instruction to replace the old defective parts, put in new oil and put an epoxy seal around the edge and put the cover back on, all in all, it was quite simple, word of advice is BE CERTAIN the part is properly installed because when I first put it in it seemed alright, but I watched the video one more time and realized it was in wrong. I also replaced the clutch, this was a bit tricky because there is an odd clip that curls around and is not easily put in place, and when I double-checked my work I realized it was not properly seated, the plastic piece that snaps in the center of the clutch housing has small tabs that come up and the clip needed to be down in tighter and be inserted and seated inside the metal tabs on the clutch housing, I also have a need for seal replacement in the spin tube inside the basket drive, so I decided to replace the basket drive because I will save money overpaying for a pro to come and replace the seals for me, and because of the difficulty level I did not want to replace the seals myself and risk doing more harm than good. 

Easy fix. 

If I had a light load and gave the basket a bit of a push it would spin but slowly. Research showed it could be three parts so I ordered them all. Neutral Assembly Pack, Washer motor drive coupling, clutch assembly. Total of about seven hours taking my time plus two trips to the auto parts store for silicone and snap ring pliers. Trips to parts store consumed an hour, roughly. Quite sure this repair saved me a few hundred dollars. Time well spent. Would have been easier with a work bench. Had to rig a fixture to hold the transmission to take it apart. Everything went in fairly easy. Left old oil in transmission. Didn't want to deal with the mess. Videos helped a LOT. There was one on YouTube for the Neutral Assembly pack. Didn't really need the motor coupling but while I was in that deep I put it in anyway. Washer spins just great now. Noticed the teeth on the inside of the agitator where the agitator dogs engage are all but gone. So I ordered a new agitator assembly. I can drop it in when it gets here. Probably a ten minute job at worst. 

Lay the washer on it's back and remove the pump and remove the wire harness from washer motor. Unbolt the transmission from tub body, pull transmission agitator from tub body and remove clutch from shaft and remove transmission cover.
