How to Troubleshoot & Replace Whirlpool AP6008659 / WP35-6465 Drain Pump Assembly

Thank God for videos! I took the belt off and hand turned the pulley wheels in both directions. One of them made kind of a gritty sound. Looked at the video to see it was the drain pump assembly. Watched the video to see what tools would be needed and how to replace it. Looked easy enough. Part came in quickly. I had it on and put back together within 20 min. of receiving it. Tested it with a load of towels and it runs like a charm. So happy my laundry room is back in business! 

High pitched clickety clack and squeal. Couldn't tell where it was coming from (motor, tub pulley, drain pump) until removed belt and manually rotating each drive component. Drain pump pulley was bound up not spinning freely. Drain pump arrived in 2 days, now back in business. Videos on this site are extremely helpful for both identifying the problem and how to change the part, before event placing the order. Customer service via chat was simple and quick as well. A+ all around.

The washer started to make a scratchy sound whenever the motor was going. I used the videos to learn how to remove & reinstall the drive belt, and, when it was off, I fiddled with the three things that it connected: Motor, Pump, and Agitator. I found that the axle on the pump was a little wobbly, so I ordered a replacement pump and watched the pump replacement video too. The parts arrived in California only two days after I ordered them, even though I asked for standard shipping. WHOOSH! I reviewed the pump video and did the work, which was extraordinarily quick and easy. The videos are wonderfully clear! Now my machine is quiet again, and I am no longer worried that it will suddenly fail, like I was before. 

I first ordered the lid switch and put that on. Had to only go back once to the video for help. No smashed fingers and very easy. Maybe I should tell you I am an 85-year-old woman with a handicapped husband. That part worked and I was so happy! But it still leaked so I ordered what was most likely to be the cause. Well, that was a bit harder as I had to move the washing machine around quite a bit and I have it sitting up on a 1-inch platform. Not sure what it was called but it was the motor that sits in the bottom front right looking at it from the front. That took a couple of hours and the belt was a little hard to get on. You really have to get your hands dirty to pull that one pully toward the middle to get the belt on. Sorry to say it did NOT stop the leak! I immediately ordered the next item they suggest. That part isn't here yet but I think it is to be easier than the pump on the bottom front. When looking for help put in your serial number right away. You can use your i-phone to take a picture of the serial number if it is hard to see without pulling everything out. Oh, I had two professionals out to fix my machine a year or so ago. The first one said it was junk. Thought he just wanted to sell me a new machine. The second one could not find where there was a problem and said there wasn't anything wrong with it. Replaced water pump spring & belt because of age. 

Boyfriend replaced the broken pump. 

Removed the rear cover. Removed drain hoses. Removed three screws from the pump. Tilted the dryer forward and removed the drive belt. Ordered the pump and got it the next day. Put the new one on and replaced the belt. Put in screws. Replaced hoses and rear cover. 

I replaced the drain pump. The drive belt was old, so I replaced it too. The whole job took about 30 minutes. I pulled the washer away from the wall about a foot. Used a plastic putty knife to release the latches locking the cabinet top and leaned the top back. Removed two screws to remove the cabinet front. Used a brick under the front of the cabinet to raise it high enough to reach the belt underneath the cabinet. Removed two hose clamps and three screws to get the belt off and the pump out. I should have clamped the top hose before removing it because there was water in it and it poured out into the cabinet and onto the floor.
