How to Troubleshoot & Replace Whirlpool AP5263280 / W10400895 Tub Centering Spring Kit

Replace 4 suspension rods for the drum. Followed two YouTube videos for directions. Fairly easy to repair, but you need enough floor space to put the washer on its side to pull the rods out from below after you have disconnected them at the top. The top attachment of rods is slightly tricky to get the rods to snap completely into the top plastic retention bracket. 

The washing machine was jumping all over due to a severe unbalance. Youtube search all pointed to the drum support rod/spring assemblies (Whirlpool P/N W10780048). Appliance Parts Pros had the parts to me the next day. Replaced them and presto! No more jumping machine. New parts have significantly stiffer springs than old parts. Don't get confused with small positioning springs (Whirlpool P/N W10400895) between drum and rod. These only center the drum when not running, and may not even be needed. Avoid using aftermarket parts available from other suppliers. These are typically not made to the same standards. It's not worth doing the job twice or buying parts twice.

The Tub Centering Springs helped, but the Suspension Rod Kit (Part Number AP5971398) did the trick. Works great now, no more banging. 

I found it helpful to have a helper when it came to the final install of the suspension rods. Holding the rod up with the weight of the drum one handed to install the plastic bearing is difficult. I used one hand to support the drum, the other to lift the rod and had a helper install the plastic bearing cap. 

We replaced all 4 rods and springs. 

Ordered the suspension rod kit along with the tub centering springs. Installation was completed in under thirty minutes. Original rod and springs lasted 8 years, hopefully these will have that kind of life also. 

Web surfing results suggested broken tub centering springs. Using a search for my model washer I found a video from AppliancePartsPros.com. Remarkably clear instructions! I opened up the top as per the video and saw that I was missing 4 springs! So, I ordered springs immediately and they arrived the next day. Installation was easy.
