How to Troubleshoot & Replace Whirlpool AP5983746 / 3949247V Washer Lid Switch Assembly

The online chat support lady helped me identify the parts we needed. Then the Appliance Parts Pros videos on YouTube helped us know how to install the parts, and they gave us enough info to know how to handle a few surprises that came up. Thank you for the good technical support all around! (It took a long time and was difficult, but only because previous owners had used gorilla glue to install the parts we were fixing. Otherwise this would’ve been a quick, easy job with the parts and videos provided. Thanks again!) The washer is working beautifully now. 

I didn't know what the problem could be. My Whirlpool washer is 20 years old and I have never had a problem with it. After doing a little bit of research, I determined that it would be the lid switch or the timer. I saw here that both are often bought together, so I purchased both. I had the parts shipped overnight. The same day I ordered the parts, I took the cover off of the washer, as instructed in the video. I wanted to be prepared so that when I got home from work the next day, I could install the lid switch first to see if that was the problem. Less than 10 minutes later, the part was installed, and I continued the wash cycle. Fixed it right up! I think it's fantastic that Appliance Parts Pros have a 365-day return policy on parts. This was my 2nd experience with APP. Satisfied customer and my fiancé thinks I'm incredibly handy! 

My Whirlpool washer was purchased in February 25, 2002. After many years of service the lid switch failed. Disassemble was slighly different from what was shown on the video, but not diffucult. Once disassembled it took me about 10 minutes to install the new part. The hardest part of the whole process was cleaning the apppliance parts not normally accessable after 12 years of use. Basically, hot soapy water took care of the problem. I reassemled the washer and tested it by running it through two (2) complete cycles without any clothes in the tub. The washer functioned perfectly, after the through cleaning and with the new part installed it runs just like it did when new. Yes, I would recommend this simple DIY part replacement. 

It took about two hours to remove and replace the part. The most difficult part was getting the machine cover to line up when doing the reassembly. The part I received was in its factory packing. I am very happy with the results and saved a lot over having to call a repair service. 

I've used this website numerous times to fix my washer and dryer. Knock on wood, my washer and dryer are 14 years old thanks to this website. I'm mechanically inclined to begin with, but as with anything else, if you don't know how something operates, it can be a little difficult to diagnose a problem properly. This sights, along with other customers comments made it easy to diagnose. Before I researched on here, I did the obvious. Took the washer apart, confirmed the pump wasn't clogged. Confirmed the pump motor was operational. Next step was to test electrical opponents. This is where I needed some help so I came to this website. Didn't take long from there. Saw the biggest problem for most people was the lid switch. Took a look at the switch, found the housing was cracked. Switch was going down, but with the housing cracked, the contacts on the inside of the switch weren't making contact. Ordered a new switch, washer works perfect again. I highly suggest coming to this website first when you have issues with your appliances. It will save you a lot of time and headaches. 

As a repeat customer of Appliance Parts I knew to look up the problem on the website. I found the parts that were suggested for the repair. I pulled up the video about the repair and in 40 minutes my washer was working again. The only difference in the video was that my washer didn't have the clips holding the wiring harness in place. I used plastic wire ties instead. 

After looking at several YouTube videos, we decided we could attempt to fix this ourselves. We found the easiest video to follow from Appliance Parts, and ordered the clips and lid switch assembly (the clips we had to replace because we goofed that one ourselves). The parts came within a couple of days. The repair took a little over 1/2 hour only because we had to re-do some steps because my husband was over anxious and did some things without reviewing the video. Overall, it was a very satisfying experience and my washing machine works! 

Ordered a door switch from appliance parts. Looked at video on how to get old switch off and new one on. Ever thing when as video showed it would. Ran washer and it when thru the cycle with no problems. Thank appliance parts pros. You know what you or doing. 

I knew absolutely nothing about repairing an appliance. But I was determined to fix it myself rather than buy a new one or pay $399.00 for the repair. That's what a local outfit told me it would cost. So I had to figure out why the washer would stop in the middle of a cycle. At first I thought it was the timer because of the general info I gathered from watching videos etc. I bought a new timer put the timer in and unfortunately the same thing happened and it stopped again. Very disheartening. Then I was told it could be the pump. I put in a pump and unfortunately that did not solve the problem. Just my luck. So I emptied the water yet again. Then finally I tried replacing the lid switch and then it finally worked. I wish I would have tried the lid switch first. I did not think that was the problem because it still retracted and made a clicking sound but rather weak. I recommend one to thoroughly look at the lid switch from underneath the shell to see if the casing is split apart. Mine was and so I had confidence it was the problem. I will keep the other parts in the washer and hope it works like new for a very long time. The actual repairing and replacing the parts were not too difficult even for one who had never done anything like this. The hardest part for me was putting the darn case or shell back over the washer. It was flimsy like cardboard.
