The compactor failed with the ram down, so the drawer wouldn't open which in turn made the mounting brackets inaccessible. This necessitated sliding a thin oscillating saw blade between the cabinet face frame and the counter top to cut through the brackets. I removed the bottom access plate to look at the drive mechanism and check the chain and gears. I confirmed the bigger drive gear was broken in three pieces. Once I replaced the gear and adjusted the distance between the two gears (which is really close to prevent the gears from losing contact and stripping them) it works great. Read more

Rood Cause #1: One of the front roller bearings was worn out and did not spin freely. Solution #1: I replaced the two front roller bearing assemblies (both included 2-pack). Rood Cause #2: The bottom surface of the compactor slide-out assembly had become deformed (convex) most likely due to the repeated force of compaction over the years. Bot both sets of roller bearings, lower ones on the appliance and the set on the trash can that rolls out. I just followed the instructions that were in the roller bearing package and only needed the tools that are recommended. Was a little tricky with the nuts, really need a person with "small" fingers to reassemble the nuts back on the lower set of bearing that are on the appliance. All in All, went well and works. Removed top plate and replaced power nuts ONE at a time (so ram does not fall). Make sure the threaded rods stick up the same amount above the top of the power nuts on each side (about 2 turns on each nut) when fastening nut covers. Now the compactor is good for another 30 years! Read more
