For Bosch Circulation Pump (Part Number: OEM8479161)

John M. for Model Number Bosh Dishwasher SHY66C05/14

This is somewhat of a long question, but I wanted to document everything I have done over the past two weeks, as accurate as possible. Recently, I noticed that at the end of the wash-cycle, the machine (drain pump ?) kept running and the display would not get to zero (typically stuck at 1 min). When opening the door, the unit stopped and the dishes were clean and dry. I examined all the parts inside the machine; such as the drain, circulation filter, arms etc., but found no debris or any other visible damage or problems. I then pulled the unit out from under the counter and noticed that the bottom pan had a lot of water in it. Used a shop- vac and paper towels to remove the water and let it dry out for a few days. After that, it would run again, but during the cycle (Quick Wash), I was observing that the bottom pan would slowly fill up with water again, and it seemed to come from the motor area (right side). So, the machine does drain, but a big part of the water and soap leaks into the bottom pan somehow from somewhere? Then, spent days on the Internet to try to diagnose and fix the problem. One suggestion was that the Float switch or Pressure Switch (water level system) [Bosch # 00499500] was defective, so ordered that part. After ordering, I did check the two switches with my multimeter and they both had continuity, so they should be OK. While waiting for this part (that I probably didn’t need) to arrive, continued searching for a solution. Found another suggestion that the Water Inlet Valve [Bosch # 00425458] could be the culprit. So, ordered that part too. The original valve looked bad and had gunk in it after 8 years. However, it checked out for continuity, but replaced it and the angled brass connector anyway oh well. Hooked everything back up and ran a Quick Wash cycle. Same result; cycle completed, but stuck at the end and too much water in the base pan. Ordered an Impeller and Seal Kit [Bosch # 00167085], another suggestion I found on-line. The part arrived today, and now I was doing the big job of getting into the guts of the machine to replace the impeller etc. However, when I got everything apart, it seemed the Impeller, the Shaft-Seal, the O-ring and the spacer where all OK (they looked no different than the just delivered replacement parts) with no visible tears or damage, now what? Also, both the large [Bosch # 00263102] Pump Gasket as well as the smaller Pump Gasket [Bosch # 00171598] looked fine and not damaged; only some calcium deposits. On the motor itself, the only thing I could see was Calcium deposits on the down end of the motor housing, probably due to sitting in water over longer periods of time. BUT, I also noticed Calcium deposits on the inside under the Impeller and it looked like these deposits may have started at or around the center pin, which seem strange, at least to a novice like me. I also visually inspected the Drain Pump [Bosch # 00642239] and checked it with my multimeter; it looks fine and has continuity, so I guess it is OK? I do not have a Capacitance feature on my multimeter, so I have not been able to check the capacitor mounted to the motor, but it looks OK (no bulging) and since the washer starts and runs, both the motor and the capacitor seem to be OK? Nevertheless, I am now totally stuck; the “patient” is lying on its back with the “belly” open and the motor removed and I still have no idea where the leak is or what causes it. The spare parts are piling up and I don’t know if I even need them. However, I still cannot see anything obvious that would cause this leak into the bottom pan which, I assume, result in the other issues with are no getting more and more expensive, and I still have not fixed my problem. Any help, suggestions, and advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Hello John, Every time I go out on one of these that has a "mystery leak", I pull the unit, hook it up so I can run it out from under the counter with an extension power line, water supply line, and just place the drain line in the sink, plugging the connection point where it was connected in its' installed position. This enables me to run the unit while I watch under the unit. It is sometimes necessary to remove the side panels, (when applicable since all do not have them), so I can see where the water is coming from. I know this is not the quick and simple answer you were hoping for, but this is where I start in diagnosing a difficult leak situation.

My Bosch dishwasher fills with water and seems to heat up but the spray arms will not spin and water is only shooting out a few inches. I have completely disassembled the dishwasher to look for any signs of damage but have found nothing. I have also replaced the water inlet valve but I am getting the same results. I'm not sure how to test the circulation pump to see if it is working correctly. Any advice or instructions on how I can know for sure it is the circulation pump that is bad?

JLW6920, With the unit filling with water but barely pumping and the pump is clear then the circulation pump would be the issue with the unit.

Hello guys, I have a Bosch dishwasher and it worked perfectly for 12 years, but yesterday I found a problem: waste water does not go out from the machine in the whole volume. In order to find out reason I disconnected drain hose from the waste line and started the heavy cycle. I have seen rotated part and strong water dropped down as usual, but no one water past through the drain hose from the machine when the cycle was finished. Conclusion: the water comes in but does not pump out. You have part # APZ826384 (Circulation Pump) in your stock but I'm not sure that if I will change it that it will help. Is it reliable to change this expensive part by myself? Thank you

Hello Mark, If the unit will fill with water and circulate it but will not drain out, the drain pump or a clogged filter is the usual cause. The drain pump can run and be bad. You see, the drain pump impeller is plastic and the drain pump motor shaft is stainless steel. It can separate from the motor shaft and the motor will run and the impel will turn but is incapable of pushing the water out. I have also found in units that have been in place for a long time can have an accumulation of grease in the lower parts of the system to include the drain line. If there are no clogs, the drain pump will solve the issue. The original drain pump has been dis-continued and you have to access the drain pump to determine the correct replacement as follows: If your original drain pump has 9 impeller vanes order 00642239 and 00623143. If your original drain pump has 4 impeller vanes order 00642239 and 00623143.

I have replaced the timer on this dishwasher twice at the end of last year. The first time was because of total failure of the timer with the all the lights staying on when it failed. Replacement of the timer did resolve this but did not address water standing at bottom of the sump (filled almost to over flow at the door). A second replacement timer did nothing to address this issue of water upon cycle completion. This problem of not draining was happening some of the time and sometimes when the cycle completes all the water has been pumped out. I have tried powering off the dishwasher at the fuse box and holding down the two cancel cycle buttons to reset the on board CPU (I assume it has one) no luck. Recently the dish washer has been pumping out completely less frequently. I am at my wits end. Is it time for a new dishwasher?

Hello Jim, The draining issue can be a bad drain pump 00167082, stopped up filters or drain hose, a failing water valve, (will partially fill during off time), or a control issue 00481055.

Hello Mike, Remove the filters in the bottom of the unit and use a wet/dry vacuum to get the water out. Use a Torx bit to remove the single screw holding the impeller protector in place. Pull this part out and use the wet/dry vacuum again to clear the impeller area. This will normally remove a piece of debris, (piece of broken glass, bone fragment, etc...), and re-install the impeller protector and retaining screw. If trying the unit does not produce desirable results, replace the pump.

Natasha, Unfortunately we can not tell you the exact part that will need to be replaced but give you idea of what to check. Based on the issue that you are having it sounds like there is either something in the wash impeller or that the circulation motor is going bad.

Hello Kurt. You will need to check and see if the motor or the pump is stuck and either needs to be cleared or replaced on the unit.

Pope, Yes, you can bench test the drain pump of the unit by applying 120 vac to it. This will tell you whether the drain pump is working. You will also want to check the drain line to make sure that there is no clogging. Check with the drain in place at the control board with the unit in a drain cycle and test to make sure that the control is putting out 120 vac to the drain pump.

Angus, The first thing you will want to check is the control board to make sure that the terminals did not burn. If this checks ok then most likely the drain pump is bad and would need to be replaced.
