The Agitator Assembly is an OEM part for GE washing machines. This essential component is responsible for moving clothes during the wash cycle, ensuring thorough cleaning by continually shifting the laundry within the drum. The agitator's design includes fins or vanes that help to circulate water and detergent through the clothes, effectively removing dirt without causing excessive wear to the fabric.

Symptoms of a bad Agitator Assembly include:

  • The agitator not moving or only moving weakly during the wash cycle.
  • Unusual noises like grinding or thumping indicating mechanical issues.
  • Clothes coming out still dirty or less clean than expected, suggesting insufficient agitation.
  • The top portion of the agitator moving independently from the base, known as "stripped" agitator dogs.

Causes of a bad agitator can include worn out mechanical parts such as gears or bearings, a damaged drive shaft, or the agitator becoming detached from the transmission due to loosening of the securing bolt.

This GE replacement part is also compatible with Hotpoint, RCA, and some Kenmore models,

Pro Tip: When replacing the agitator, also consider replacing the agitator coupling (WH49X10042).

We are constantly getting lint on our clothes from the washing machine. Already tried the basic troubleshooting tips. Think we might have to clean the lint trap. Guessing it's somewhere in the agitator. How can I remove the agitator in this model to get to the lint trap? If there's a screw, then it is difficult to get to because underneath the fabric softener assembly is a hard round plastic cap that I can't get out from the center of the agitator assembly. Thank you for any help you can provide.

Justin, You will want to take a rope or something similar and run it under the agitator. Working your way around, pull up on the agitator. You will need to use leverage and force to do this.
