Joseph, No, the filter assembly doesn't have "charcoal bits in it". The filter has a fabric-based medium that is impregnated with activated charcoal (it would look like black dust). The filter is a well made, efficient and quality part from the manufacturer. As for part price, AppliancePartsPros.com makes a minor adjustment to the cost of the part from the manufacturer. Thanks,

EK, To remove the grill, once the screws on top are removed you will slide the grill to the left. This should allow the grill to come off.

Layne for Model Number JMV6175 FES

We just bought a brand new GE microwave. It has a charcoal screen but I can not get the top plastic cover off where I think it is to be inserted. I took out the three screws on top but the plastic covering was stuck tight at the bottom. Looked like it may have a screw in the bottom of the plastic. I can pry it open to peek inside and only to get a finger in. Any further and the plastic will crack. Plastic cover won't come off and i couldn't even see where a screen would even go. Does this unit have to be used with a Charcoal Screen?

1 Answer

Hello Layne. Try sliding the grille to the left and see if it releases and will come off the unit.

Hello Rusty. No, usually you can remove the top vent grille from the unit and install the new filter without uninstalling it. We will need your model number to help you more with this. Please call 1-877-477-7278 or post your model number with a new question on the parts page. Here is a link to help you locate it. http://www.appliancepartspros.com/modelnumber_locator.aspx
