The Temperature Control Thermostat is an OEM part for GE refrigerators. It functions as the primary sensor and control for regulating the refrigerator and freezer temperatures, ensuring that the appliance maintains optimal cooling conditions. By monitoring the internal temperatures and triggering the cooling system when necessary, this thermostat helps preserve food freshness and consistency.

Symptoms of a bad Temperature Control Thermostat include:

  • The refrigerator or freezer being too cold or too warm
  • Frequent or continuous running of the refrigerator
  • Unusual fluctuations in internal temperatures

Causes of a bad thermostat can include electrical issues such as faulty wiring or sensor malfunctions, wear and tear from normal use, or improper settings that prevent the thermostat from accurately gauging and controlling temperature.

This GE replacement part is also compatible with Hotpoint, RCA, and some Kenmore models.

Carl, Thanks for the question!!! The wires can go on either terminal. A thermostat acts as a switch and it will make no difference which wire goes where.

Daniel, it is recommended that the vents going from the freezer to the refrigerator are inspected for ice blockage. If there is ice blocking a vent, it would need to be cleared and the defrost drain would need to be cleared of any clogs it would have.

Mickey for Model Number GTS16DBEJRWW

Have a wireless temperature sensor in freezer, alert unit. Set hi temp 25 deg F. Has history monitoring, normally see hi 6-7, low 0-1 deg. Then beeper went off one nite. Been experiencing wild temperature swings. We removed food. Overnite once went to 51 deg. But when it does this, readily cools to near 0 deg. Adjust thermostat to slight cooler. Been fluctuating -10 to above 25. Coil is clean, fan at lower rear back blowing/venting ok. When temperature starts creeps up, fan in freezer not blowing. When temperature starts falling, freezer fan blowing. No frost/ice inside. Have bottled water, freezes hard. But low temperature -8 to -10 range. Too cold. Adjust thermostat slightly to try reach near 0 deg. But later, overnite seeing high 15-16 deg, but not set off sensor monitor high beeper. Frig in garage, ambient temperature mid 90s, humid during day, 78-80 at nights. Thermostat? Or defrost timer or other?

Mickey, The unit being in the higher temp Ambient air will cause the unit to not cool as well as it should except when the temperatures drop. Also when the temperature elevates may be at times where the unit is going into a defrost and would be the reason that the fan is not blowing. If there is an issue with the unit it would more likely have to do with the thermostat on the unit.

The amount of questions on a part does not reflect the part having issues. If your temperature control is bad and this is the one for your model, you should replace it with this genuine GE part.

Mitchell, based on the information provided, this would certainly be a temperature control WR09X20002 issue as the thermostat should be reaching 33 to 41°F when set to 5 depending on the ambient room temperature.

Hello Antonio. You need to unplug the unit and remove the screws securing the control panel in the fresh food section. Drop the panel down and access the temp control. Remove the old control and install the new control in the same location in the unit.

Fridge and freezer stopped cooling over night. Fridge temp approx. 50, freezer food half defrosted. Light on, no compressor, cond. fan or evap fan. running. Moved temp control both ways, nothing. Unplugged, re-plugged, nothing. Emptied unit. Moved unit out, comp. cold to touch. Cleaned condenser. 5 minutes later while scratching head, unit turned on. Cond. fan and evap fan running. Whats up?? Stuck defrost control? WR09X10049 Stuck defrost t-stat? WR50X10021 OR ??? THANK YOU

1 Answer

Robert, Based on the issue it sounds like the unit did stick in the defrost cycle. This would be caused most likely by a defrost control part number WR9X502.

Hello. Usually middle is the recommended setting from the manufacturer. Look for an even frost pattern on the evaporator coils. If there is not one, you have sealed system failure and will need an HVAC tech to repair the unit.
