The Oven Igniter is an OEM replacement part for GE ovens, designed to ignite the bake igniter to start the heating process. This part is responsible for creating the spark that ignites the gas, providing the heat needed to cook and bake food. Over time, the oven igniter can wear out or become damaged, which can prevent the oven from heating.

Symptoms of a bad Oven Igniter include:

  • The oven not heating up at all.
  • The oven taking longer than normal to heat.
  • Gas smell in the oven due to gas being released without ignition.
  • A clicking sound without the oven igniting.

Causes of a bad igniter can include normal wear and tear over time, exposure to excessive heat or moisture, or physical damage from impact or mishandling.

This OEM GE part can also be used on Hotpoint, RCA, and Kenmore/Sears appliances.

IMPORTANT: The connector plug may need to be cut off and igniter wires connected to range wires using porcelain wire connectors.

Lys for Model Number JGBS23DEM1BB

Recently my oven has given me problems. My range top works perfectly but on Christmas day my oven was not putting off much heat. I few days later i tried it again. The igniter is lit up orange. I can smell gas but it takes about 3 to 5 mins to ignite. The oven then made a whooshing noise when it finally ignited. It said that it preheated to 400; however, when I opened the oven door it was probably closer to 200. Do you think this is just an igniter that needs to be replaced?

1 Answer

Hello Lys. Yes, it sounds like the ignitor is bad and will need to be replaced on the unit.

Brenda, With the installation of the oven igniter there will be no gas turned on so will be no issue with replacement. It will only fit into the location that it is supposed. You would splice the wires only if the connector does not fit with the connector on the range then you would cut the connectors off and splice the wires together with ceramic wire nuts.
