The stator assembly is the stationary coil pack for the direct-drive motor in your washer. Working with the rotor, it creates the magnetic field that turns the tub and restores consistent wash and spin performance. What it does:

  • Generates the electromagnetic field that drives the rotor and spins the drum
  • Failure can cause no spin or agitation/tumble, or a stalled drum
  • May trigger LE/motor error codes and a humming or grinding noise from the motor area
  • Can produce a burning smell or signs of overheating near the rear of the machine
What's included:
  • 1 stator assembly
Install notes:
  • Disconnect power; move the appliance for rear access and turn off water if needed
  • Remove the rear panel, rotor bolt, and rotor; handle strong magnets with care
  • Unbolt and replace the stator; transfer the hall/position sensor and harness if attached, and secure wiring
  • Reinstall the rotor and panel; run a test spin

Check the inner drum by hand to see if it can be moved up and down changing the gap size between the drum and the tub. You may have a broken spider assembly 4434ER0002H.

Hello Mark, Since the stator windings are encased with a type of enamel to insulate them from neighboring windings, it is not recommended to clean them with anything other than compressed air. If they are contaminated with oil, it would be advisable to replace the stator assembly 4417EA1002H. Thank you for your patience and understanding in this matter.

Vince, Check to make sure that the tub will spin freely by hand. If it will not, get the tech sheet from inside the unit and put the unit into a service diagnostic mode to see if there are any stored error codes. The error codes will help determine what is going on with the unit.

Steve, Unfortunately the manufacturer does not give torque specs on the rotor and stator. You will just make sure that they are tight and would recommend on the rotor to put blue loctite on it.

My washer's drum bearings and seals were failing. I'd previously replaced them about 2 years ago. Before I was able to get them replaced, the washer started tripping the GFI. Right now it trips the GFI immediately when plugged in. I double checked the outlet, it's fine. I suspect it's a ground fault in the stator, but it could be another ground fault ahead of the stator (like a control board or relay?) Is there a way to narrow this down and isolate the ground fault?

1 Answer

Mike, Thanks for the question!!! You would need to remove one component at a time by disconnecting and isolating the wiring from each part. Then plug the machine in and see if the GFI trips. When it does not trip you will know you have found the part causing the issue. Possibly a long task but without fail the only way to find the part at causing the issue.

Hello David, using a multimeter check the ohms of the motor stator coils, about 5-15 ohms on each coil, terminals 1-2,2-3,1-3, next check the wire harness stator to main board, if ok the main controls power the motor, the main board 6871ER1062G is no longer available.

Hello Jim, it sounds like the controller for the drive motor is weak rather than the motor itself, the motor controller is part EBR38163302 however it is discontinued and no longer available. You can check the motor's stator windings with a multimeter, each winding should read 5-15 ohms.

My wash machine stop spinning, I opened the back and forced it slightly to spin, I noticed a lot of rust. I removed the wheel of magnets that sits on the coil and seen that the magnet is shaving and the degree built up and got the rotor stuck. I cleaned it as much as I could with a nylon brush and it spins. 1 question...why is it shaving? 2nd question can I clean it with brake fluid? 3rd question Does the coil need to be replaced? 4th question why would it be rusty, but I don’t see any water?

1 Answer

Peter, the magnets are a soft material that are running very close to the metal coils. The shavings can come from many possibilities to include an overloaded basket causing excess vibrations, dust or debris in the assembly, the stator expanding from heat, and so on. It would not be recommended to clean this with brake fluid or any flammable fluid as these are electrical coils. The best option would be to replace the rotor 4413ER1003A and stator 4417EA1002H together so that any damage does not pass over from the possibility of an original part causing this. In regards to rust if bleach is used, over time rust will form on any metallic surface that can rust due to bleach vapors circulating through the vent.
