Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Washer Shift Actuator (Part Number: OEM18111819)

1 Answer

Hello Adam, this may be caused by a problem in the drive clutch (splutch) W10721967, however if either the shifter or clutch fails again then there is a mechanical problem in the gearcase W11449840.

My problem is with a Maytag washer. It is only 2 and a half yearrs old. When it agitates the drum only moves a little clockwise and counterclockwise. (a few inches in each direction) and the clothes basically sit there. I have tried diagnostic mode and found nothing standing out. Trying the service technicians manual checks it seems the J2 Connector has no resistance (OL). After a few more tests the service guide says to "Replace the shifter assembly". I find no part called Shifter assembly. Is the part I need the Shift Actuator? Appreciate your help!

Leigh, It would be best to put the unit into diagnostic mode using the tech sheet and see if there are any error codes. This could be a shift actuator problem but the error will guide you.

The nature of my problem is. The washer will fill for a wash cycle but does not transition to wash or rinse. If I turn the cycle selector switch to drain and spin. The lid will lock and it will drain and spin. If I turn it to rinse and spin it will fill but not rinse. If I cancel the cycle it will drain. I have replaced the lid switch and the control board and it is producing the same problem. I am at a loss for what the next step might be. I have tried turning the agitator and it turns with the drum but if I hold the drum the agitator will spin independently of the drum without much effort. I will state that as it is filling it does sound like it is trying to spin but I do not know if that is like a pre soak thing or something.

Keith, the failure cause would be dependent on what specifically has failed with the shift actuator W10913953. If the shift arm is breaking, it is possible that the control is not causing it to shift fully into place which can cause strain when the motor starts. This often causes some grinding on the clutch. If the mounting screws are loosening during operation, it can cause the actuator to move around and create strain as well.

Rolando, Do the calibration based on the tech sheet that is located inside the washer and as far as the unbalance, the suspension rods will be the most common cause for this.

Steven, This would be more likely an issue with the splutch not rotating properly. The gearcase should not cause this issue to occur.

Hello Robert, the shifter was faulty the washer would neither agitate nor spin. The main control board is powering the motor and monitors the clothes basket RPMs, the control board will try to spin the basket up to its fastest set speed, however, if the clothes load is too heavy or there is friction in the gearcase for some reason which is overloading the motor then the control will lower the speed accordingly, usually when this starts to occur the problem is in the gearcase, W11454734 ,there are no spin bearing used in this design, it is all in the gearcase.

Joe, Thanks for the question!!! Check inside your machine for the tech sheet. Find how to run the diagnostics mode and see what code you get.

Run a diagnostics mode to test the shift actuator. If it tests okay and the clutch is okay, you would have a failed gearcase.
