The Water Temperature Switch is an OEM replacement part for Whirlpool washing machines. This switch monitors incoming water temperatures to ensure they fall within the thresholds required for selecting dependent wash cycles. It plays an important safety function by preventing the activation of vulnerable "hot" cycles if water is too cool.

Causes of a bad water temperature switch can include failures from repetitive heating/cooling cycles, mineral deposits obstructing sensors over time, or defective temperature sensing mechanisms.

Symptoms of a bad water temperature switch include:

  • Inability to select high-temperature cycles
  • Fault codes related to water supply temperatures
  • Potential improper washing if the temperature reading is inaccurate

This OEM Whirlpool part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore models.

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Water Temperature Switch (Part Number: OEM18049497)

1 Answer

Suze, You will want to make sure that the water pressure is not too high. If the water pressure is too high it can cause chattering. Try turning the supply down and see if this does not correct.

Joseph for Model Number Estate ETW4400XQ0

I turn the water temp selector to hot fill, but only warm comes out and sometimes only cold. Put it to warm fill, and most of the time, it's only cold coming out. I can flip the switch and sometimes it'll start up again normal, but only for a few seconds during fill, then goes to cold. Is it the thermister, or is it the ATC acting like it should (does this washer even have ATC), or is it a faulty water temp control. I don't want to throw parts at it only to find out its nothing or the other control. Any advice would be appreciated.

Hello Joseph, the unit sounds like it's working like it was designed to. The hot cycle should be around 100% plus or minus 10% and will cycle more warmer water than cold. Hope this helps!

Mike for Model Number 110.29522801

Kenmore 110.29522801. When first started, warm water is provided, but after about 15 seconds, it turns off the hot and will not cycle it back on. If hot is selected, hot is provided; if cold is selected, cold is provided. Problem is with warm only. Fill valve was recently replaced due to "stuttering" - turning on and off rapidly. I see the fill valve includes a thermistor, so I suspect the new valve, but before I throw parts at is I would like to know if there is a way to test the thermistor. Thank you.

1 Answer

Mike, Unfortunately the fill valve thermistor is not showing a resistance value that you can test it. This issue would most likely be caused by a water temperature switch that is faulty since the thermistor is new with the valve.

Hello Anne, I'm sorry but we will need to ask you to post a new question including the model number from your units' I.D. tag so we can recommend a hot water valve that can be guaranteed to work properly on your unit. Thank you for your patience and understanding in this matter.

Hello Nancy. It sounds like the water valve is either clogged or bad on the unit. Check the screens in the valve. If they are clear, replace the water valve WPW10144820 on the unit.

Nancy, Think there's a couple of possibilities, first check and make sure there is plenty of water coming from both faucets. Remove the hoses and check the debris screens in the end of the hoses and in the water valve inlet where the hoses connect to the washer. Clean and remove any sediment that has accumulated in the screens. If all appears OK, and the problem persists, replace the water inlet valve WPW10144820.

Roger for Model Number 110.29422801

Kenmore washer does not fill with warm water. It will fill with hot, tap or cold when selected. On warm, it fills almost all the time with cold water. Occasionally, it will fill with hot mixing for a few seconds at a time. When the problem first appeared, the hot water valve was causing water hammer due to shutting on/off so rapidly. I have replaced the inlet water valve but it made no difference. Could it be the temperature switch part # w10184148?

1 Answer

Roger, The most likely cause for the unit to put only cold water into the unit on warm would be a faulty thermistor which is part of the valve. The part number for the valve is WPW10144820.

Hello Karlos. If the unit spins, but does not fill, you may have a bad pressure switch W10337781 on the unit. You will need to replace the hose along with the switch in the kit.

1 Answer

Hello Dennis, This sounds like either a bad connection through the water temperature switch circuit or a failed hot water valve WPW10144820.
