The Water Temperature Switch is an OEM replacement part for Whirlpool washing machines. This switch monitors incoming water temperatures to ensure they fall within the thresholds required for selecting dependent wash cycles. It plays an important safety function by preventing the activation of vulnerable "hot" cycles if water is too cool.

Causes of a bad water temperature switch can include failures from repetitive heating/cooling cycles, mineral deposits obstructing sensors over time, or defective temperature sensing mechanisms.

Symptoms of a bad water temperature switch include:

  • Inability to select high-temperature cycles
  • Fault codes related to water supply temperatures
  • Potential improper washing if the temperature reading is inaccurate

This OEM Whirlpool part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore models.

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Water Temperature Switch (Part Number: OEM18049497)

Brian A for Model Number ETW4400WQ1

I was told to replace the W10184148 part after my washer would start to fill but then shortly turn off within 10-15 seconds. Now since I've inserted the new one I can only get a full cycle to fill and run on the Highest Hot/Cold setting. The other three still have the same previous issue of starting and then turning off after several seconds. I've double checked the water lines. They are clear. Is there another issue elsewhere? Or is it a faulty product part? All the info seems to match except it does say Rev C instead of Rev B switch

1 Answer

Brian, with a cycle started and the temperature set to cold, the temperature switch WPW10184148 would need to be tested for 120VAC at the wire on pin 5. If there is 120VAC, the wire at pin 1 would need to be tested for 120VAC. If there is not voltage at pin 1, the temperature switch is the issue. If there is voltage, the water valve would need to be tested for 120VAC, and if there is not, the wire harness W10307145 has failed. If there was not 120VAC at any test point, the wire harness has failed. Unfortunately, the harness has been discontinued by the manufacturer and is no longer available.

T. M. James, Check for power to the hot valve when this happens. If there is power to the valve the board is likely the issue.

James, We will need to have the model number of your unit to properly assist but you will want to check to see if there is 120 Vac getting to the water valve when set to cold. If there is not 120 Vac then the control would be the issue. If there is 120 Vac then check the screen on the water valve to ensure that it is not clogged up and if it is not then replace the valve. If it is clogged up then clean it out and see if that does not correct the issue.

Carol, On the cold water setting it will allow the unit to be at a predetermined temperature where it may add a little hot water to achieve that temperature. The tap cold is just that, straight cold water.

Is there any way to get a tub full of hot water? When I set the dial to Hot Wash/Cold Rinse, hot water comes on but VERY quickly changes to cold and the tub is full of barely warm water when done filling. I thought the washer temperature control switch may be faulty so I purchased and installed a new one but nothing really changed. So what I have to do to get a tub of hot water is to reverse the hoses on the back with cold tap connected to hot on machine back and hot connected to cold. I then have to set the dial for cold wash with cold rinse to get a tub full of hot water. Is there anything else that controls the water temperature other than the control switch I purchased?

1 Answer

Dorothy, the hot wash water temperature should be 105°F when it is filled up. As the temperature switch has been changed out, if the water does not reach 105°F, the thermistor in the valve assembly WPW10144820 would be the likely cause of failure.

Hello Renee, the temperature of the wash/rinse water is controlled by the water temperature control WPW10184148 which reads the incoming water temperature thru a thermistor in the water valve.

Brandon for Model Number WTW4816FW1

When the water temperature is set to hot the washer will dispense cold water, and then cycle to hot and cold water being dispensed at the same time, and then back to cold, etc. I believe this is normal, but the problem is that when it is done filling, the water is lukewarm at best. The same thing also happens when the washer is set to warm (although I'm not sure any hot water is cycled in). When the washer is done filling, it is cold. Also, the washer fills the tub quite full even when there is a very little amount of clothes in the tub (I don't know if this is a related problem, or even a problem at all). Thank you in advance for any help you can offer.

Brandon, This washer has a thermistor in the water valve assembly and the board reads the temp from the thermistor as the water runs into the machine. Based on the temperature settings as to hot, warm, or cold it will use both the hot and cold valves to satisfy the required temperature. This is a feature called automatic temperature setting or ATC. These settings are pre-determined by the manufacturer to help save damage to clothing and to provide optimum wash temperatures for detergent and fabric softeners.

Mike, I believe you simply need to reverse your water lines. The rinse setting uses cold water only.

Hello Mahsa. Some models have a thermistor. On those models it brings in hot water to break down the soap. Even on cold cycles. If your model is one of those, then that is normal operation and you can not change it. Thank you.
