The Water Temperature Switch is an OEM replacement part for Whirlpool washing machines. This switch monitors incoming water temperatures to ensure they fall within the thresholds required for selecting dependent wash cycles. It plays an important safety function by preventing the activation of vulnerable "hot" cycles if water is too cool.

Causes of a bad water temperature switch can include failures from repetitive heating/cooling cycles, mineral deposits obstructing sensors over time, or defective temperature sensing mechanisms.

Symptoms of a bad water temperature switch include:

  • Inability to select high-temperature cycles
  • Fault codes related to water supply temperatures
  • Potential improper washing if the temperature reading is inaccurate

This OEM Whirlpool part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore models.

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Water Temperature Switch (Part Number: OEM18049497)

Kate, The first check needs to be at the fill hoses and valve, they both have debris screens, that can clog with sediment and debris in the pipes. Disconnect the hoses, and clean the screens. If the problem persists, replace the ATC water temperature switch WPW10184148.

Jesse E. for Model Number Whirlpool WTW5800SW0 Washer

The ATC on my Whirlpool washer appears to be reversing hot and cold water. When in the Hot position, the water is cold. When in the Cold position the water is hot. This just recently started happening. I have verified that the water hoses are connected properly and that the water valve electrical connectors are correctly installed. Also, the thermistor on the water valve appears to be working correctly when measured at the connector to the ATC (about 40K ohms at room temperature and the resistance reduces when the valve temperature is raised). Can the ATC malfunction in this way? Seems very strange. Thanks for any suggestions you might have. Jesse

Jesse, This issue would be caused by a faulty temperature switch. This happens due to the switch is a electronic control and becomes faulty. The part required would be the temp switch WP8577786.
