The Brake Assembly is an OEM part for Whirlpool washing machines. This component plays a crucial role in stopping the washer drum from spinning at the end of the spin cycle. It ensures that the drum comes to a complete stop, allowing for safe unloading of laundry and preventing potential damage to the machine. Brake removal tool: TJ038315

Over time, the brake assembly can wear out or become damaged due to frequent use and the stresses of stopping a spinning drum. If the brake assembly fails, it can lead to issues with the washer’s spin cycle and overall performance.

Symptoms of a bad brake assembly include:

  • The drum not stopping quickly after the spin cycle
  • Loud noises or grinding sounds during or after the spin cycle
  • The washer shaking or vibrating excessively
  • Clothes remaining too wet after the spin cycle

This OEM part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore models.

Dave, it's probably neither. check the motor carriage and make sure it moves freely back and forth. Make sure the belts are adjusted properly. Install the belts, hold the motor in position and squeeze the pump belt in the center, the interior surfaces should barely touch each other. If all's OK, then you'll need to check and replace the tub bearing and tub seal assemblies.

Bob, For the issue of the squeal on completion of the spin cycle, this would be a brake issue. The pulley not turning clockwise with the belt off would most likely be a thrust bearing issue.

Ben, If your brake package WP6-2011900 is the original equipment, it is slightly different that the photo of the more recent version, and a little easier to work with. Yes, the brake package is a "wet" brake system and does get lubricated if the brake starts to squeak. You lubricate the brake with one(1) teaspoon of Maytag transmission lube, or 90 weight gear oil will also work. you can use a teaspoon to install the oil. put the brake package on it's side. place the spoon into and against the brake rotor, tilt the spoon up and allow the oil to trickle over the rolled edge of the outer ring(stator). let the brake package set for a few minutes to allow the oil to equalize and distribute evenly throughout the package. Once the package is installed and the washer is level, put the timer in the final spin and start the cycle, lift the lid a few times so the tub stops spinning, this will help distribute the oil and help the cork core absorb the oil.

Mike, This issue would not have anything to do with the bearing but would be more likely that the brake is bad and would need to be replaced. The part number for the brake is WP6-2011900.
