The Brake Assembly is an OEM part for Whirlpool washing machines. This component plays a crucial role in stopping the washer drum from spinning at the end of the spin cycle. It ensures that the drum comes to a complete stop, allowing for safe unloading of laundry and preventing potential damage to the machine. Brake removal tool: TJ038315

Over time, the brake assembly can wear out or become damaged due to frequent use and the stresses of stopping a spinning drum. If the brake assembly fails, it can lead to issues with the washer’s spin cycle and overall performance.

Symptoms of a bad brake assembly include:

  • The drum not stopping quickly after the spin cycle
  • Loud noises or grinding sounds during or after the spin cycle
  • The washer shaking or vibrating excessively
  • Clothes remaining too wet after the spin cycle

This OEM part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore models.

Hello Kathy, access the gearcase drive pulley under the washer, remove the belt and manually turn the pulley, one direction is for agitation the other will release the brake and allow the basket to turn slightly.

Debbie, Thanks for asking!!! The oil is likely from the transmission. It is possible the seals have failed.

Having an issue with the washer not spinning and burning the belt. After reading through your site I have done the following: 1) Made sure there was nothing between the drum - all good. 2) Replaced both belts. Motor slides freely and with the belt off, the transmission pulley spins counter-clockwise fine and clockwise with a little resistance after it takes up the spring tension. I did notice that if I give the transmission a little push when in spin it will work just fine. This morning I removed the belts, cleaned the pulleys thoroughly, and applied belt dressing to the belts. The washer will now spin on its own, but I have a feeling it won't be doing that for long. What could be the issue here? Brake Assy? Tub Bearing? There are zero water leaks from the tub, but there is oil on the lower pulley whcih I assume is from the brake assy? Any help would be appreciated, want to keep this old machine going. Thanks

Shawn, the oil leak would be coming from the transmission and is likely from a degraded lower lip seal 207843. It is possible that there could be an issue within the transmission (such as a piece of debris from a gear) that could have freed up. Inspecting the gears of the transmission would be recommended in this case.

MAYTAG LAT8704AAE won't agitate. Fills with water. When it gets to the agitate cycle, belts rotate, no agitating and smells like burning rubber. Turn the timer past agitate cycle, tub drains and spins. Fills at the rinse cycle. At the rinse agitate cycle, belts rotate, no agitating and smells like burning rubber. Turn the timer past agitate cycle, tub drains, spins and is done. Under the machine rotating the center wheel counter clockwise, no prob. The drum spins. Can only rotate the wheel 1/2 revolution clockwise. Then it stops. Tried rotating the agitator inside the tub, does not budge. I know it's not the motor because I replaced the motor thinking that was the issue. I was incorrect.

1 Answer

Chuck, if there is not an item stuck between the agitator and the spin basket, the failure would be in the transmission being seized up. The transmission can be disassembled to identify what specific part could be causing it to seize.

Hello Marcus, while this could be a brake problem, on that model sometimes the gearcase drive pulley will get caught at the top of the shaft and hang up holding the brake open allowing the basket to rotate in agitation. The repair in that case will be a new pulley WP6-2301530.j

Jeff for Model Number LAT9235AAE

I received a call about this washer not spinning. My customer informed me that he had another repairman working on it that replaced the bearing, for a screeching noise, and then 2 weeks later, replaced the brake assembly because it was still screeching. Now it won't spin. It agitates while when it's supposed to spin. What was done wrong? Could it be a bad brake assembly? Or simply assembled wrong? I'm thinking the roller bearing that sits on the drive pulley may be bad or wasn't replaced when the machine was assembled.

1 Answer

Jeff, the brake assembly would need to be inspected for proper installation as it is possible that the spacing of the drive block is not set to 3/8"clearance from the pulley when the pulley is against the brak assembly.

Trinidad for Model Number LAT9804AAE

My washer agitates, but it will not spin. Often times I would reset the entire wash cycle and then the washer would go through the entire process and make it to the end having spun and drained the load. Over time, more and more when I come back to the washer there is still water in the tub with the load inside. I have replaced the washer drain pump, the belts look like they are in perfect condition. When I try to wash a very heavy load, it always stops at the spin portion of the wash, does not spin and the water does not drain. The timer advances to the end. When I remove the wash load from the tub and restart the cycle, sometimes the washer will go through the entire process and be empty at the end. Sometimes it will again not spin and not drain the water, even when there is no load inside the washer drum. After the research, I am assuming it is either the brake assembly, or the tub bearing that I need to replace. I do not see anything leaking from underneath after having removed the front panel. Thank you

Hello Trinidad, This will most likely be an issue with the spin bearing considering the design of the unit. You will need to order both the Mounting Stem Repair Kit 6-2095720 and the Tub Bearing Repair Kit 6-2040130 to properly repair the unit.

Hello Curtis. You will need to check the bearing out for the tub. It could cause it to be tight and in a bind. If that is good, then check the brake out on the unit. Thank you.
