The Complete Agitator Assembly is an OEM part for Whirlpool washing machines. This assembly includes the central vertical agitator component along with the retainer ring. Together they are responsible for the agitation and rubbing motions that work to remove soils and stains from clothing during wash cycles.

Causes of a bad agitator assembly can include wear and tear leading to wobbly or loose motions, cracks in plastic components from repeated impacts, or corrosion of metal components.

Symptoms of a bad complete agitator assembly include:

  • Vibration or shaking issues during agitation
  • Improper or lack of agitating of clothes
  • An agitator that is difficult to rotate by hand
  • Cracks, missing pieces or corrosion visible upon inspection

This OEM part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and some Kenmore models.

Hello Ed, You can normally use something like sandpaper to smooth the rough place out if there is not a major crack or gouge in the agitator. If the agitator needs to be replaced and you would like assistance in finding the correct part number we would need to ask you to please post a new question including the model number from your units' I.D. tag so we can recommend parts that can be guaranteed to work properly on your unit. Thank you for your patience and understanding in this matter.

Hello Peter. It is best to use agitator grease for the lubrication when replacing the cam and dogs. However, if you buy the assembly, it is ready to install out of the box. Thank you.

Pirate for Model Number WTW5100VQ0

Hello! So the agitator on my Whirlpool WTW5100VQ0 is moving slowly. The bottom agitator moves back and forth as it should and the upper agitator moves as it should. I just installed a new cam kit on the upper agitator. So now, after the water has filled the tub and begins the washing cycle, the clothes stay stationary, while the agitator is doing it's thing, slowly. It seems like the agitator is not getting enough "power" to push the clothes around. I've tested this three times, once with a small amount of clothes and again with a heavier load of clothes, then finally with no clothes and there is not a lot of splashing action as there once was. I get the same result each time. I checked the drive motor coupler and it was in good condition. The machine will spin and rinse as it should. The slow moving agitator is my only problem. I will say before this the washer was working perfectly prior to this. One day after washing around 5 regular loads of clothes and upon starting my 6th load, I noticed a loud grinding sound - like plastic rubbing against plastic maybe? This occurred while the machine was in the wash cycle. I thought maybe something had gotten caught under the agitator, so I turned the machine off and tried to move through the clothes to try to feel for something amiss. I did find the clothes were violently twisted around the agitator - so very badly that it took about 20 minutes to untangle it all. I then turned the machine to the rinse/spin cycle, so I could get the clothes out and inspect the machine further. After watching some repair videos, I decided to install a new cam kit in the top agitator as the dogs were definitely stripped. However, this did not fix the issue. I am not sure what to do now. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Pirate, This issue sounds as though this will be a stripped agitator that is not allowing the unit to rotate properly. If the agitator checks ok then this would most likely be a motor that the high side winding is not working.

Robin for Model Number WTW4850XQ1

Good afternoon, I replaced the dogs, and following that my washer makes a very loud, horrible grinding noise only during agitation (during the sensing mode, wash mode, and rinse mode when it's supposed to be moving). It doesn't appear to be agitating either because my clothes are not clean. It spins and drains perfectly and only has problems when agitating. My thrust spacer is definitely damaged (ripped) and I will order a replacement for that. When I move the agitator while tub is empty, the top part turns freely clockwise, and when turned counterclockwise it moves the whole tub and appears to catch on the dogs MOST of the time. The cam parts look good, however I need to replace the seal on the cap that covers that area, as the cover slips down when I reassemble the agitator. I am not sure if the threads on the bottom agitator are stripped, and I'm not sure if the bolt is holding tightly. The bolt really looks fine, just dirty. The agitator is really dirty and I'm not sure what the threads SHOULD look like. I checked the belt underneath, and the cover to the belt has been damaged by the pulley, almost cutting through it. The belt is on, in good condition, and tight. I took the pulley cover off and the washer still makes the same horrible noise. I didn't want to over tighten the bolt holding the pulley so that may be a problem too. I am trying to figure out where I should start in the steps I've already taken but not been able to determine if the part is actually broken...i.e. agitator stripped?, etc. and what else I need to repair the whole thing. I will be ordering the cover seal, the agitator bolt, and the thrust spacer for sure. Your suggestions and PROFESSIONAL help are most appreciated. Thanks!

Hello Pamela, If the water does not fill so the upper part of the agitator is in the water, it will just rattle around during the wash. If you not done so yet, hold the lid switch in and let the unit agitate to see if the agitator is the part causing the loud noise.
