For Whirlpool Refrigerator Ice Maker Assembly (Part Number: OEM9548208)

Paul for Model Number 2198597

Ice maker was replaced a year ago, and makes ice, but will not DISPENSE it. The ice in the bucket thaws a little then refreezes each time the freezer door is opened. With all the cubes frozen together, the dispenser arm cannot possibly turn. I removed the frozen together cubes and the dispenser arm does not turn when the "dispenser" button is pushed, either when empty or with a few cubes in the bottom. It would appear that the motor which turns the arm of the dispenser may be bad. However, I am reluctant to replace it because the frozen together cubes may have caused the dispenser to go bad and I expect that to happen with a new dispenser motor. My question, finally, is why do the cubes freeze together? (A) Is it because my grand children leave the freezer door open too long looking for popsicles? or (B) Is the operating temperature of the freezer not cold enough?

Paul, If the door is being held open too long then this will certainly cause the cubes to freezer together. Also look for a issue with a possible air leak around the dispenser door. If this checks ok then it sounds like just the door being open too long would be causing this.

Paul, Without the model, we can only assume what could be going on with the auger motor. You can always test at the auger motor for 120 vac and backtrack from there. Basically, the ice maker has a heater that comes on when cycling to warm up the mold to free the frozen ice, then when it dumps you have wet ice falling onto the frozen ice and sticking together. Then they rely on the auger motor to break this ice back up when the dispenser is calling for ice.

Lou, You could possibly have a water valve that doesn't seal properly and allows water to constantly drip into ice maker overflowing and leaking out the dispenser. Another scenario is the defrost drain is clogged and when the unit defrosts the drain water cannot escape and goes to the floor.

Encarnacion, If the icemaker is making very little ice then this will most likely be caused by the unit getting cold enough in the ice compartment. You will want to check this.

Hello Brad, You will need to force the icemaker to cycle and check for 120Vac at the water valve for about 6 to 7 seconds near the end of the icemaker cycle. If the voltage is present and water pressure is sufficient, the water valve W10408179 is at fault. If there is no voltage at the water valve, there is either an icemaker 8201515 or 2198597 issue or a problem with the wiring harness.

Michelle, There is no timing mechanism that will help to produce ice faster. This unit should produce ice about every 1 to 1 1/2 hours and only puts out 8 cubes at a time. The only thing that will affect how quick the unit makes ice would be the temperature of the freezer which should be between 0 and 5 degrees. If it is not withing this range it can cause longer ice production times.

Don, The shaft that goes to the ice bin on the door may have risen up a little if the bin was difficult to take off. You will want to try to tap down on the shaft about a 1/4" or so in order to get it to seat properly.
