Pearlean, " the little metal rod that is on the maker " should be in the "UP" position to turn Off the ice maker. But if " the ice maker is not connected for making ice " then there should be no water on the top shelf in the refrigerator. Another remedy could be to disconnect the ice maker wire harness from the connector on the back wall of the freezer compartment ? If you need more assistance, please include the model number of your refrigerator. Thanks,

Junbug, Check to make sure that the icemaker does not have a deteriorated mold. If it does then this will need a new icemaker. Also check for a frozen fill cup. If it is frozen then this will be a faulty water valve.

Rick, You will want to just put your fingers in the icemaker and see if there is ice or water in it. If the unit is not producing ice then you will want to check to see if the light is flashing on the right side wall of the freezer. If the light is flashing then you will want to push the flapper on the side wall and see if the light continues to flash. If the light continues to flash then this will be a bad emitter board which will need to be replaced.

Joyce, You will want to pull the icemaker out and check to make sure that the fill tube is not frozen. If frozen clean ice out of tube and replace the water valve. Check the emitter board and make sure that it is good by opening the door. With door open the light on the right wall should flash. If the light flashes then push the flapper on the left side and see if the light glows solid or continues to flash. If it continues to flash then it will be a bad emitter board. If it glows solid then it is good. If it checks ok then replace the water valve.
