Paul for Model Number 2198597

Ice maker was replaced a year ago, and makes ice, but will not DISPENSE it. The ice in the bucket thaws a little then refreezes each time the freezer door is opened. With all the cubes frozen together, the dispenser arm cannot possibly turn. I removed the frozen together cubes and the dispenser arm does not turn when the "dispenser" button is pushed, either when empty or with a few cubes in the bottom. It would appear that the motor which turns the arm of the dispenser may be bad. However, I am reluctant to replace it because the frozen together cubes may have caused the dispenser to go bad and I expect that to happen with a new dispenser motor. My question, finally, is why do the cubes freeze together? (A) Is it because my grand children leave the freezer door open too long looking for popsicles? or (B) Is the operating temperature of the freezer not cold enough?

Answer

Paul, If the door is being held open too long then this will certainly cause the cubes to freezer together. Also look for a issue with a possible air leak around the dispenser door. If this checks ok then it sounds like just the door being open too long would be causing this.

Answer

Paul, Without the model, we can only assume what could be going on with the auger motor. You can always test at the auger motor for 120 vac and backtrack from there. Basically, the ice maker has a heater that comes on when cycling to warm up the mold to free the frozen ice, then when it dumps you have wet ice falling onto the frozen ice and sticking together. Then they rely on the auger motor to break this ice back up when the dispenser is calling for ice.
