This thermostat regulates the appliance's internal temperature by cycling the cooling or heating circuit on and off to maintain your set point. Replacing a failing thermostat restores accurate temperature control and consistent performance.

  • Monitors temperature and opens/closes electrical contacts to maintain the selected setting
  • Helps resolve symptoms like temperatures that drift, nonstop running, or failure to start/stop at the set point
  • Can address an unresponsive or erratic control knob and irregular cycling
  • Restores stable, predictable operation after a worn or stuck thermostat
What's included: 1 thermostat Install notes:
  • Disconnect power before servicing; work in a cool, dry area

My Maytag freezer will not cool to the required 0 degrees. It will cool down to about 24 degrees and maintain that temperature. Here is what I have done. I replaced the defrost heating element (because I broke the glass on the old one). I also replaced the defrost thermostat since only half the coils froze over. The compressor runs fine and the temperature control thermostat turns on and off properly. Yesterday, I removed the temperature control thermostat to see if I noticed anything obviously wrong. As usual, the people that wired the freezer must have received a big bonus for saving wire. It was extremely difficult to re-install the thermostat since the wires were so short. While looking over some parts diagrams, I noticed a tube (thermostat tube barrier ) that is attached to the thermostat. I did not see this tube attached to my thermostat. If this tube fell down inside the walls of the freezer would that keep the thermostat from working properly? I don't mind buying this tube, but the whole thermostat is expensive and I have already put too much money into an old freezer. Help! Bob

Bob, The tube would not just fall off the thermostat and if the evaporator coils only have a partial frost pattern then this will be a sealed system issue in which there is either a leak or a restriction in the system which will require a service technician.

Freezer was not cooling/freezing on top shelf. Needed defrosting. Compressor was running. I unplugged it and defrosted. REmoved ice. Now nothing works. Compressor no turn on, No fan. No nothing. Lost all power - unit appears electrically dead. There is power at the light bulb. All else nothing! Serviced in 2011 w new run capacitor (AP4074063 / 65889-4) and new compressor starting device (AP3885081 / 8201786). New fan motor also installed at that time. Has run well until now. What would knock out all power?? Thank You!

1 Answer

WCBaugh, This issue would most likely be caused by a faulty defrost timer WP3-81329. Since the unit needed defrosted and when unplugged and plugged back and now will not work sounds like the defrost timer is sticking in defrost and went into defrost when the unit was plugged back up.

Hello Tina. Yes, you will need to replace the thermostat. We do not have a video at this time. To replace the part, disconnect the power and remove the knob from the thermostat. Then remove the 2 screws and bracket. Pull out old thermostat. Make sure the new capillary tube on the new thermostat gets installed into the same location as the old one.

Hello Al. This is normal. The unit has a loop in it that gets very hot. As long as it is cooling fine and the condenser coils are clean, then it is fine.

James, On this style thermostat WP4-83053-003 it doesn't matter. The switch is a "single pole, single throw" (SPST) switch. When the cooling cycle is operating the switch has a "closed" circuit and supplies power to the compressor. When the temperature selected is reached the switch "opens" and removes power to the compressor until the cycle repeats.

I checked freezer does not work all food has thawed and the compressor and fan do not run. The light comes on when I open the door. I checked the temperature control switch and found 120ac on the red wire going in but no voltage out. Could this be the problem or is it the overload switch he temperature control switch and found 120ac on the red wire going in but no voltage out. Hello Bobby. It sounds like you may have a defrost problem with the unit. Check and see if there is any frost build up on the back wall of the freezer. If so, you will need to test the defrost heater and the defrost thermostat. They should read closed for continuity when cold. You can test this with a multi-meter TJMA-DMT3. I will include a link at the end to assist you how to use the multi-meter if needed. If both parts are good, you will need to replace the defrost timer. Once the problem is repaired, you will need to thaw out the ice on the coils before the unit will operate properly. http://forum.appliancepartspros.com/oven-repair-including-ranges-cooktops/4810-how-check-continuity-ohmmeter.html
