I have a Kitchen Aid side by side refrigerator/freezer which is 8 years old. One day it just stopped cooling. At first I was just going to junk it and purchase a new one. Replaced capacitor and starting relay on the compressor in 15 minutes. The problem may have just been the capacitor, but rather than trying that and if it didn't solve the problem i would have had wait for the relay. Read more

Replaced the defrost timer. It was not located where the parts explode suggested in the thermostat control box which is located in the upper right corner of the liner. It was in fact outside the freezer compartment on the back lower left support (when looking at the back of the freezer). It is secured with 2 sheet metal screws with a 1/4 hex head. Removed the handle with two screws on the inside front and pulled out the custom wood panel. Pulled the compactor out from under cabinet. Tipped it over on back of unit, supporting it with a little foot stool. Unscrewed two lower screws at bottom of unit holding black trim panel (that held wood panel in place) and lower black rubber flap.
