Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Control Board (Part Number: OEM18040020)

Denis, The clean light flashing would indicate that there is a problem with the heating circuit of the unit. You will want to check the heater and thermostat for continuity. If they both have continuity then they are good and the control board would be the issue.

So, I am back. Following up from my previous question/answer. I received the new control panel. Thinking to confirm whether the control board was actually bad, I assembled with the new control panel and old control board. It worked fine for about a week (2-4 usage cycles). Then I did another load (overnight) and I see in the morning all the lights are off, dishes partially cleaned, and water still in the unit. Now, no lights, controls, etc. I attempted all combinations of the control boards and panels I have to no avail. Breaker is ok and there is power. Can I presume the dishwasher is now DOA and I should get a new one? I would then return both the control board and panel since they are of no use to me.

David, If there is no power to the unit then test the control board to see if there is 120 vac getting to it. If there is not then test the thermal fuse to make sure that it has continuity. If this checks ok then check the connection at the bottom of the unit where the supply attaches. If the power checks ok there then the issue will be in the wiring. If there is power at the control board then check the door switches to make sure that they are good for continuity when the door is closed. If not then replace the door switch.

Hello Jed, I'm sorry but you will need to verify the model number from the units' I.D. tag for us to be able to help. The model number provided is not coming up as valid. IF the breaker has been turned off and back on the issue could be in a junction box or the primary circuit of the unit. We can help you further when you post the verified model number in a new question. Thank you for your patience and understanding in this matter.

So, this started with the unit running long then it did finally stop. Ran again and it was running for over 2 hrs and still showing 45 minutes. So I stopped it, emptied it, etc. Ran diagnostic and it ran (no errors I could tell), but at the end it started fast flashing start/resume and showed -- with the normal light lit. Now based on reading things control board problem. I get a new controller board and install. Now, with either board, when I turn it on it instantly goes to "normal - heated dry - soaking". Does this for a minute or so (and water is flowing in) and then stops and shows -- with fast flashing start/resume. If I power on an immediately hit cancel/drain it will drain (showing 2) and then stop and never get to 1 and shows the -- with flashing start/resume. It does drain (mostly). I somehow got it to power on and have the display clear/standby (not sure how) and re-ran diagnostic. It ran through and then did same thing. When it is in the -- flash state hitting any key either does nothing or toggles the normal light on/off. Ideas? Maybe the key panel? Or ???

Hello David. Yes, it sounds like the key panel will need to be replaced along with the board on the unit. Make sure the ribbon cable is seated good on the unit.

Hello. I need to replace the control board part #8557794. I have found that on your site and it seems easy enough. My problem is that the two black connectors, which go from the wiring harness to the CON2 and P1 terminals on the board, have burned and melted so I cannot use them on the new part. How do I find replacements for these connectors? I do not want to replace the entire harness if I do need to as at some point repair is not as economically feasible. Any help you can provide is appreciated. Thanks!

1 Answer

Rusty, Unfortunately the connectors are not available as a separate part and would require the harness to be replaced. The harness part number is 8557794.

Link, First we're going to need a complete and proper model number, that way we can trace. track wires and circuits properly(especially a Sears/Kenmore machine). In most cases the tan wire at the control board is routed back to the door switch, through the thermal fuse and down to the electrical junction box. Check the power connections in the junction box, make sure everything is attached properly and tightly. Check the wiring and connections at the heater element and high limit switch on the bottom of the tub. Loose wire connections can cause high amperage draws and voltage spikes, causing connections to burn and fail. You'll want to check the thermal fuse in the control panel, for a closed circuit and the door switches and wires on the latch assembly.

Hello Steve, This is a heating circuit failure. You should check the heating element, and the high limit thermostat. The other components in the circuit are the control, the door switch and the wiring harness. Be aware that if the unit is not securely fastened to the cabinet, the door switch for the heating circuit may not be making electrically. The unit must be secured in a level configuration so the door switches can make electrical connection properly when the door is closed.

Petko, You will want to make sure that you are purging the hot water at the sink prior to starting the unit. You will also want to make sure that the water temperature is at least 120 degrees. Check to make sure that the heating element is working.

Hello Mark. If the fuse is good and there is power to the board, but nothing lights up, you will need to replace the control board in the unit.

Anthony, This issue would most likely be caused by a faulty control board for the unit. When the unit shuts down and should be running would sound like a fault with the communication in the board.
