Walt, For this issue you will want to check the heater and thermostat to make sure that they are good but the issue would appear to be a faulty control board.

Hello Fedilias, This is going to be a stuck key on the control panel 3384774. I'm sorry but this part has been discontinued by the manufacturer and no satisfactory substitutions have been provided.

Debbie, You do want to start by testing the control panel thermal fuse 675813 it is a good possibility it's "open" based on your post. Of course you need to remove power to the dishwasher, then remove the screws holding the inner door liner to the door frame. be careful with the wires to the control board, and remove the two wires attached to the fuse. Set your meter to the lowest resistance setting and place the meter leads across the two terminals, you should have a "closed" circuit. If not replace the fuse kit. If the fuse checks "closed" then you'll need to remove the lower access panel and kickplate, and check the wiring connections inside the junction box mounted to the front frame of the dishwasher. If the fuse and the connections in the junction box are OK, then start by replacing the control panel 8274721 it's more likely to be the issue than the control board.

Tom S

We have a Whirlpool dishwasher model number GU980SCGQ3, serial number FL1826234, purchased in 2001 We have had no problems with the dishwasher since it was purchased. However, in the last week, it has displayed a sporadic problem. When I got ready to wash the dishes, one light on the control panel was flashing. I have never used the delayed wash cycle, and had not pressed the pad, but the indicator was flashing for a 2 hour delay. I tried pushing the pad again, and the light did not shift to the 4 or 6 hour stage as it was supposed to do. I tried to set the “normal” cycle as usual, but the pad did not respond and did not light up. After several attempts, it finally lighted, started the cycle and washed the dishes. When the cycle was done I noticed there was more water than usual in the bottom of the washer. A day later, I had the same problem with the 2 hour delay light. I tried pushing the “cancel/drain” pad, which did not light up until I pushed it several times, but then it drained the extra water. The “normal” cycle, however, did not respond at all. A few hours later I tried again and was able to make the washer work. The following day there was a different problem - the “controls locked” pad was flashing. After several tries, the light stopped flashing, but the 2 hour delay started flashing. I have been unable to make the washer work since then, and the 2 hour delay continues to flash if the door is latched.. I did note that of the 21 lights in a line on the control panel, the flashing occurs in either the first or last light in the row. The Whirlpool website suggests that one cause of a flashing light may be that the heating coil is not working, and should be tested for continuity. While we are unable to remove the heating element, testing it in the machine with a simple continuity checker (battery and light bulb in series) indicates that it is OK. Now the dishwasher has a different problem. Some of the lights display every time I latch the door without pressing any pad. I did not change anything on the panel, but one time I accidentally latched the door, the display showed some of the correct lights, but without the “washing” indicator, and did not run. Twice the display was exactly what I want - the normal cycle, including air drying - and the washer worked as usual, except that it left more water in the bottom. The display changes somewhere each time I accidentally latch the door. Sometimes it flashes only the 2 hour delay light. What can we do to determine fix needed, and is it economically sound to repair at this age rather than just replace the dishwasher? thanks for the help.

Randy, The more likely issue is in the control panel / key pad assembly 8051707 Apparently the "Normal" wash keypad has failed " ERROR MESSAGES STUCK KEY: If the control detects that a key is stuck in the depressed position, dishwasher operation will be suspended and the control will flash the light for that key until the condition is corrected. If a key without a light is stuck or multiple keys are stuck, the control will flash the Lock-Out light."
