This bake element is the lower heating coil that provides the oven's primary heat during Bake. Replacing a worn or burned-out element restores fast preheats and consistent cooking results in electric ranges/ovens.

  • Provides bottom heat for the Bake cycle to preheat and maintain set temperature
  • Common symptoms: no heat on Bake, very long preheat, uneven/undercooked results, or visible blisters, splits, or burn marks on the element
  • If Broil still heats but Bake does not, the bake element is a likely failure point
Includes: 1 bake element Installation notes:
  • Disconnect power by unplugging the appliance or switching off the circuit breaker
  • Remove oven racks; take out the element's mounting screws, then gently pull the element forward and disconnect the two wire terminals
  • Support the wires to prevent them from slipping back into the rear cavity; position the new element and secure with the mounting screws
  • Restore power and test a Bake cycle

Brian, If the oven cavity bottom is solid then there is only a small channel in the rear to remove the element and no access for cleaning. All you can do is run a self-clean and let whatever has spilled burn off.

Steven, To remove the bake element, if there is no access in the back then the side panel will need to be removed to take the element out. This will require the main top to be lifted and the screws on the top of the side panel and the back of the panel to be removed.

Cainst for Model Number GY397LXUS03 (Whirlpool)

During the self-clean cycle, my oven tripped its breaker. After turning the breaker back on it tripped the main breaker to the whole house. One of the element's lead wire female connectors was burnt and stuck to the side of the oven. Also saw evidence of an arc on the metal of the oven wall. I didn't see any other poor wiring connections. Do I just need to replace the burnt wire connector? Is this as easy as cutting off the old terminal disconnect, and crimping a new one on?

1 Answer

Cainst, Thanks for the question!!! Yes, it should like correcting the wire issue should solve the problem. It is as easy as cutting off the old terminal disconnect and crimping a new one on. There is a slight chance that other components (mainly the oven control) could have been damaged but you won't know till the wiring is corrected.

Brandie, If you can see the bake element inside the oven then you could remove the 2 screws that hold it in place and slide it out but make sure that the breaker is turned to the off position. If the element is not showing then this would be a hidden bake element and you would need to remove the oven from the cabinet to gain access to the element.
