The Ice Maker is an OEM part for Whirlpool refrigerators. It automates the ice production within the freezer, providing a steady and reliable supply of ice cubes.

Causes of a bad Ice Maker can include malfunctioning water valves, clogged filter systems, or issues with the thermostat that affect ice production. Additionally, mechanical failures in the ice ejector arms or the heating mechanism that releases the ice can prevent proper functioning.

Symptoms of a bad Ice Maker include:

  • No ice production or very slow ice production
  • Ice cubes that are smaller or larger than normal
  • Ice that tastes odd or smells bad
  • Loud noises during the ice-making process

This OEM part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore models.

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Ice Maker Assembly (Part Number: OEM18079050)

Hello Rito, and thanks for the question. Many of these plastic icemaker trays will start pitting over time, and the ice cubes do not always eject properly. They can leave small parts of ice in the tray. This causes water to overflow the tray and eventually ruin the plastic tray. A lot of times it is due to minerals in the water. Make sure your filter is changed regularly, and if it is bad enough, consider a water softener for the entire house..

Kirk for Model Number WRS571CIHZ01

Replaced the ice tray with a OEM factory ice tray, checked all the wiring from the bottom of freezer, appears not cuts in the wire covering and no kinks or smash damage, I made sure the plugs to ice maker off/on was tightly engaged and the other plug for tray - all plugged in and secure. The tech sheet was not in the tray at the bottom of the refrigerator when I removed the bottom cover. What next? No water is being discharged into the tray? Freezer and refrigerator are working normal. I have waited over 24 hours.............. TIA

Hello Kirk, thank you for contacting AppliancePartsPros.com This might be wiring in the door LW11202405 that is the issue, but there are some tests to make 1st. You will need to enter diagnostics mode. Run test 44 with the ice bucket empty and in place first with the doors closed, if it shows 23 on the display after attempting to run the test then the wiring in the door is usually your issue if the ice maker has already been replaced. If test 44 runs the ice maker and shows 22 go to test 45, give it about 30 seconds or until the display shows 02, whichever comes 1st, before attempting the test. If the ice maker does not fill and you hear the valve activate then the valve WPW10341320 will need to be replaced. If the test acts like it is running but you are getting no reaction from the valve it is probably a control board W11293378.

Hello Jackie, thank you for contacting Appliance Parts Pros. That is a possibility, but you would need to be able to go into diagnostic mode and run test 15 to prove it. If you still have the original tech sheet that came with the unit it will walk you through running that test.

Hello IceHelp, thank you for contacting Appliance Parts Pros. Test 45 staying at 01 isn't so concerning to me, these can be odd about transitioning to 02 on that test which you can usually just select that test and wait about 30 seconds before trying to start it and then try to initiate the fill regardless of it showing 01 or 02. The problem I see here is test 47 showing 02/open. I would recommend removing the toe plate at the bottom of the unit and opening the freezer door, there should be 3 harnesses down there, look for any pinched or broken wires going into the freezer door.

Hello Bnard, thank you for contacting Appliance Parts Pros. Diagnostic mode tests and wiring/connection checks would be next. Without a model # we are limited on the amount of guidance we can provide, but one thing I would look at is the wiring harness going into the bottom of the freezer door if this is a side-by-side unit. Remove the kickplate, open the freezer door, and examine the wiring harnesses going into that door fo any pinched or broken wires.

Andy S for Model Number WRS588FIHV00

Whirlpool side by side unit. Ice maker will make one batch of ice and refill the tray with water but then won’t dispense that new batch until I turn the ice maker switch off then on. It will then dump another batch, refill with water and not dispense again until I switch it off and on. Could it be the ice maker unit? As background years ago I had the door replaced under warranty due to broken lower hinge wires, but wires are not broken this time. Thanks

1 Answer

Andy, You will want to place the unit into service diagnostics and check to make sure that the emitter and receiver board is good. If it is good then the icemaker would be the issue.

Ed, You will want to test to make sure that there is 120 vac to the water valve. If there is power to the valve but no water running in then the valve is faulty. If there is not 120 vac to the valve then the icemaker would be a faulty.

SL, the ice maker W10873791 tray would need to be inspected for any cracks that may be allowing water to leak through to the ice bin. As there are only some of the cubes becoming hollow, it would also be recommended that the fill tube is checked for any ice accumulation that may be causing the water to not fill properly.
