The Spark Module is an OEM replacement part for Whirlpool ranges. It is an electrical component that generates the spark needed to ignite the gas burners. By sparking consistently and reliably, the module allows the cooktop burners to ignite with each use.

Causes of a bad spark module can include normal wear and tear over time, exposure to moisture or residue, or issues with the electronic components that produce the spark.

Symptoms of a bad spark module include:

  • Burners that will not ignite or light consistently
  • Burners that ignite but then immediately go out
  • Only some of the burners lighting while others do not
  • A clicking sound coming from the ignitors but no visible spark

Note: For harness from spark module to igniters use part number 9756892.

This OEM Whirlpool replacement spark module is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore models.

Hello Zaid, This sounds like a bad relay on the control or a gas vlave issue. If you could please post a new question with this information and the model number from the units' I.D. tag, we will be able to more closely diagnose the issue and provide part numbers for the units' repair. Thank you for your patience and understanding in this matter.

Kyle, If you are getting display on the control panel but none of the oven burners are working and the top burners are not working then the issue will most likely be caused by the spark module. The spark module part number for this unit is WPW10331686.

Bruce, You will want to check the resistance of the oven safety valve and make sure that from the middle to either of the outer terminals that there is 216 ohms of resistance. If this does not have the proper resistance then the issue will be a faulty oven safety valve.

Hello Doug, As per the owners' use and care guide on page 19: Gas range noises during Bake and Broil operations Noises that may be heard during the Bake and Broil operations: Whooshing, Poof, Clicking, Snaps, Pop These sounds are normal operational noises that can be heard each time the Bake or Broil burners ignite during the cycle. ¦ A pop can be heard when the gas valve is opening or cycling on and will make a single pop when it snaps open from the solenoid. It sounds similar to a suction cup being pulled off of a piece of glass. ¦ The igniters will click several times until the flame is detected. These are short clicking sounds like tapping a nail onto a piece of glass. ¦ A whooshing or poof sound is heard when the Bake or Broil burner ignites. ¦ On some models, a clicking sound can be heard when the convection fan relay cycles on and off.

Doug, You will want to check the burner tubes for rust around the ports and if this checks ok then the issue will most likely be caused by a faulty oven safety valve for your unit.

Stove and broiler both light fine. Bake lighting is hit or miss. Sometimes will ignite in the first click or two. Other times the first round of clicks is unsuccessful, it waits 30 seconds and then tries another round of clicks. Once the oven is hot, it never seems to have trouble relighting (to maintain temp). When it doesn't light I do smell that gas has been released. I replaced the igniter and that didn't make any difference. I think I have it narrowed down to spark module or gas valve. Am I on the right track? How do I figure out which one is the problem? And what are the part numbers I would need for those two items for my oven? Thanks. -John

John, The valve would be a possible cause for the unit to not light properly. You will also want to inspect the burner to make sure that there is no rust or corrosion around the ports. If this checks ok then the valve would be part number WPW10602004.

Hello Mike. There is no set number of clicks. Usually 2 to 4. Could be more or less. As for relighting, yes it should to regulate the temp in the unit.

Sandra D. Based on the description of the problem, everything seems to point to a control board that may be causing this issue. The part number for the control is WPW10424330.

Have a Whirlpool gas range that suddenly started having issues with lighting the 4 main burners on the top (center unit still works) and gas apparently is flowing as you can light them with a different ignition source. You can hear the ignition spark but it's rate is slower than normal. Also the oven is not turning on the oven. Looking at the wiring diagram the only connection to all is the DSI board. Would the best guess be replacement of the W10331686 board?

1 Answer

Hello Doug, It is normally a better idea to verify a good ground to the burner base since this is the most common cause of ignition failure on gas units. If the metal parts that carry ground to the area around the ignitor have lost connection, there will not be a spark generated hot enough or in the correct position to ignite the fuel. If this does not correct the issue and the ignitor wires are in good condition, use a paperclip or safety pin to clear the orifice and the next thing to try at this point would be the spark module WPW10331686.
