Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Motor Start Switch (Part Number: OEM18038667)

1 Answer

Vic, as the unit will run properly in every other cycle, the failure is most likely going to be caused by a cam failure in the timer WP3351119.

Hello Muhammad, Need to bypass the lid switch and unplug the motor connector. Set to spin and turn on with the motor wiring connector unplugged. Check for 120Vac to more than one terminal on the motor connector at the same time. There should only be 120Vac on one terminal. More than one terminal energized indicates another issue that will have to be troubleshot with a test meter. There are several things that can cause this including a bad timer, motor, fabric selector switch, and/or wiring harness. An experienced technician may need to troubleshoot to determine the exact cause so parts will not be replaced arbitrarily.

Smramp for Model Number WTW57ESVW1

Washer fills but won't activate on any wash cycle. It will count down the timer during the wash cycles and drain, spin, fill, rinse and then spin dry but it won't agitate. Watched videos for "agitator" problems and went through the troubleshooting for the agitator in the in the video. The "dogs" look fine. Do not hear the anything while it should be agitating...just sits in the cycle until the timer ends and it drains. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

SmRamp, You would want to check to make sure that there are no broken wires to the motor but if they are good then this will most likely be an issue with the timer having faulty contacts.

Russell for Model Number 110.24942301

How do I ohm test the motor start switch? Part number is 8529896. My washer, when it is completely full, stops at the rinse cycle, and when you try to get it to start, only runs about 20-30 seconds and puts off a burning smell. Let it sit for an hour, and it starts and completes the rinse and spin cycle, no problem On the other hand, when you put it through a short wash cycle, with nothing in it, it completes the entire wash and rinse and spin cycles. When you do the latter, and lift the lid, it stops as it should, but when you close the lid to start it back up, it makes a crunching noise for a few seconds before it takes off and runs normal. By the way, I removed the pump and motor, and the motor coupling looks fine. Appreciate any help you could send my way. Thanks! Russell

Russel, with the power cord unplugged, and the wiring harness of the centrifugal switch disconnected, the switch would be tested for continuity and there should be continuity from the red wired terminal to the black wired terminal, then the orange wired terminal and the blue wired terminal. There should not be continuity between the orange wired terminal and the blue with an orange stripe wired terminal. Then with the switch in the run position, there should be continuity between the orange wired terminal and the blue with an orange stripe wired terminal while the red wired terminal to the black wired terminal should not have continuity.

Forrest for Model Number 110.82980120

This new switch. listed as a replacement part number, doesn't interchange with the original switch. The white starter circuit engagement lever that protrudes from the back of the black housing to engage the motor's centrifugal mechanism is too short, and the lever from the old housing is not interchangeable into the new housing. I had to disassemble both switches, and swap all ten brass terminals and their associated contactor assemblies (everything inside except the actuating lever) from the new switch housing into the old switch housing. My old contacts had burned, as a result of my old cracked housing allowing them to move around. Then, I had to repair my existing black housing with epoxy and some bits of plastic sheet so that all the new terminals were firmly seated. So - my washer does now work, but only perhaps 10% of the pieces of the purchased new switch were used, and I'm still stuck with a repaired original housing. This was not a simple repair. I do have a sequence of pictures showing the work.

Hello Forrest, the drive motor is part [WP661600] it comes with the centrifugal switch already installed as part of its assembly.

Ajit, This issue would be caused by a centrifugal switch that is sticking closed. This would require a new motor.
