Mr. Mayor, Sometimes the spanner nut will seize to the drive hub, due to corrosion, electrolysis, or overtightening. The spanner nut haas "standard" threads, make sure you're turning it in a counter clockwise direction to loosen and remove the nut. You may need an assistant to "hold" the spin basket still, long and hard enough to "break" the spanner nut loose. The last resort would be to cut the spanner nut in two with a cold chisel or use a "dremel" tool , just be careful not to damage the tub mount flange on the spin basket center tube.

Kathryn, It doesn't sound like a Spanner nut issue, you may want to check and make sure there are no small articles stuck between or under the spin tub. With the type noise you described, and depending on usage the issue could be in the drive tube assembly W10820043 or the center post assembly 285203. When the bearings are worn, thay can make a noise similar to your description.
