Hello Jim. The short, offset end of the spring will be inserted into the opening on the shifter lever and twisted, so it "locks" in place. The hooked long, straight portion of the spring will be inserted into the opening on the bottom of the speed control plate.

Hi. ON/OFF switch not correctly adjusted with the switch control link. Check the switch control link lever part # 9709278. See page # 13- L. Section and read page # 14. It will explain the lever operation and placement procedures. The spring is part # WP3183680.Thank You.

Brian, The short preshaped(bent) portion of the spring WP3183680 attaches to the opening on the speed control lever WP9709276. The longer looped end of the spring attaches to the control plate, just as you described. Thanks
