The Light Switch is an OEM part for Whirlpool refrigerators. This switch is responsible for controlling the refrigerator's interior light, turning it on when the door is opened and off when it is closed.

Symptoms of a failing refrigerator light switch include:

  • The interior light staying on when the refrigerator door is closed
  • The light not activating when the refrigerator door is opened
  • Intermittent or flickering light due to a loose connection or faulty switch

Causes of light switch failure typically involve mechanical wear from repeated use, accumulation of dirt or debris that can interfere with the switch mechanism, or electrical issues such as short circuits.

This OEM part is also compatible with other brands manufactured by Whirlpool, including Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, and others.

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Light Switch (Part Number: OEM18017526)

Wayne, if all three LED modules have been replaced, the failure would either be in the door switches or the wire harness running through the cabin liner. The door switches can be tested for continuity from the black wired terminal to the yellow wired terminal when the appliance power cord is unplugged. There should be continuity every time the switch being tested is released after being pressed in. If one does not have continuity after being released, that specific switch has failed. If there is continuity every time, there is likely a wire failure. Unfortunately, a wire failure inside of the liner is not repairable.

I have a slightly different problem with my Whirlpool side by side. The LED lights in both the freezer and fridge only flicker and do not fully light up when I open the door. If I have the door open and press the freezer switch they stop flickering. Same for fridge side. Do I need to replace the lights, if so how do you get the lights out. the unit is about two or three years old and does not have screws holding it in. It looks like the clear cover might snap into place. Thanks for your help.

Hello Arnie, the LED light modules can be removed with a putty knife, just get under the edge and pry slightly they will release and come out, if you have the flickering light problem replace the light module WPW10515057 in the freezer.

Hello Mary, unfortunately there is no video for this part replacement, however, it is easy to do, first unplug the ref from power, if you look at the new light module you will see some tabs on sides of the module, this is what holds it in place, use a putty knife and get under the edge of the freezer light and lightly pry it down, once down disconnect the wires and reattach to the new module and press it up into place.

Dave, the failure of the door switches can cause this failure. The freezer W11457217 and refrigerator WP2149705 door switches can be tested for voltage output when opened and the yellow wire on each switch should have 120VAC when in the open door position. From there, the top refrigerator light WPW10515058 can be tested for 12VDC output when the door is opened by testing from the red wire (with the red probe of a meter) to the yellow/red wire (with the black probe of a meter). If there is not 12VDC, then the light has failed and would need to be replaced.

Heather for Model Number WRS325FDAW02

We just moved into this house a few days ago and our side by side fridge is a whirlpool, its 5 yrs old (I think). The fridge and freezer work as well as everything else and the lights on the ice maker and the light work. The LED lights are blinking in the fridge, when opened. And the freezer light is totally out. I'm not sure what type of LED light part # to replace with? Can you please provide a picture of what kind of light and the part # I would need to buy? And I don't know how to replace it, I have never seen this style of light before. Is there a video you could provide also? Any tips and tricks how to get the light out etc. Thanks so much!

Hello Heather, the led lights are in series, the faulty light in the freezer is causing the other lights to be dim or blink. The freezer light is part [W10515057], it just clips in place. To remove just press in on the sides of the light assembly case and it will come off.

Matt D for Model Number KSR25QGWH01 kitchenaid side by side refrigerator

All of the lights on the refrigerator side are completely out, including the lights on the LEDs of the temperature control. The lights on the freezer side work fine, and the fridge / freezer function fine. I replaced the light switch, part# AP2967092 and it did not fix the problem. What else can it be, I see there is a control board that the lights plug into, could it be that? Please help me with this. Thanks.

1 Answer

Matt, There is a control board located at the back of the unit which would most likely be the cause for the failure of your lights not working. The model number that is listed is not coming up so we would not be able to provide the part number.
