This water level switch senses the dishwasher's tub float and controls the water inlet. Replacing a worn switch restores correct filling, helping prevent overfilling or dry cycles that can reduce cleaning performance. What it does:

  • Monitors the float position to open/close the fill circuit at the proper water level
  • Common symptoms: dishwasher won't fill or stops filling too soon
  • May also cause continuous filling/overfill if contacts are stuck closed
  • Intermittent operation can leave the tub underfilled and washing performance poor
What's included:
  • 1 water level (float) switch
Install notes:
  • Disconnect power and shut off the water supply before servicing
  • Remove the toe/kick panel to access the switch near the float assembly under the tub
  • Note wire positions; transfer connectors one at a time and secure the switch in its bracket
  • The float moves freely and actuates the switch before reassembly and testing

For Whirlpool Water Level Switch (Float) (Part Number: OEM18043332)

Marcus, For this machine to start the door switch has to have continuity in a closed state for power to get to the timer. There are two on this unit and one switch carrys voltage and the other switch is the neutral side. Check your home power supply at the junction behind the kick panel first to make sure there are not any burned out wires or loose connections. Also advance the timer to other sections in a cycle to see if it washes or drains.Make sure the float switch is not stuck in the up position inside the unit not allowing a fill. I would first inspect the door switches in this scenario.

Hello Jimmy, check if there is any blockage in the drain hose or where it is connected to the house drain plumbing, If ok you may need to access the drain pump/impeller inlet and check for blockage.

Richard for Model Number MDB6650AWW

My dishwasher doesn't seem to be getting any water. If I fill it with water it will work properly and run through all the cycles. I checked the water supply to the dishwasher to make sure it was on and there were no blockages. I also replace the water inlet valve and that did not fix the problem. The float is working properly and I can feel it move freely and I can hear the switch click. I haven't looked at the water level control switch yet. Could that be the problem? Please advise. Thanks, Rich

Hello Joe. If you can stop the water from entering the machine by turning off the power, you will need to look for a bad float switch. If the only way to shut off the water is at the shut off, you will need to replace the water valve in the unit.

Hello Mino. You need to remove the drain hose from the unit and check and see if it is clogged. If not, and the unit does not drain, you may need to replace the pump and motor assembly in the unit.

John, The proper water level in the bottom of the tub should be determined by starting the dishwasher, allowing it to run three to five minutes, then unlatch the door, and remove the lower rack. If the water level is correct, the heater element should be partially, to fully submerged. If the water level is proper, you'll need to check the lower spray arm 6-903473, and the support seal rings 912313 for leaks and water mis direction along the bottom of the door.

Phil, There should be a nut WP911265 that you screw the shaft of the float stem WP99002363 through(three or four turns) to keep that from happenning. Hold the nut above the water level switch lever, with a pair of needle nose pliers, drop the float through the tub opening and turn the float 3 or 4 revolutions, make sure the stem does not get twisted or bent. Thanks and Good Luck
