  • Advances automatically based on the selected cycle and knob position
  • Common symptoms of a failing timer: won't start, won't advance or stops mid-cycle, runs continuously, or no agitation/spin

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Timer, Control (60 Hz) (Part Number: OEM18026904)

Bert for Model Number LSQ9659LW1 2003 Whirlpool top loader washer

In wash mode the agitator surges, clicks then stops before completing the agitation, this galloping cycle is repeated every 1 second. At the end of the wash cycle the drain pump works, the basket spins. In the next cycle, SPIN, the tub is empty and the basket tries to spin, clicks, then the motor stops trying, this galloping surge keeps happening every 1 second. Opening the lid reveals the tub basket spinning slowly. The next agitate cycle also fails. I have replaced a bad motor coupler, one end was rounded out, I replaced it with the new coupler with the metal insert, a parts shop tried to sell me the old all plastic version. This restored function to the problem to the level described above. It had stopped even trying to start agitating or spinning before this repair. I have inspected and cleaned the drain pump and hoses. I have inspected the inlet water hoses & screens. I have removed the motor transmission assembly and inspected and cleaned the clutch. It looked fine: good pads, no debris, the cup was slightly worn but polished. The brake actuator works, the pads are in good shape. I removed the basket and thoroughly cleaned the basket in and out, and the inside of the tub. They were both filthy with lime, calcium, rust, soap scum, and dirt. getting the agitator off was very difficult, had to bang it a bit and do repeated deep lifting. Getting the 2 parts of the agitator apart was very, very difficult. Your tech video helped, I stood on the lower agitator and pulled hard on the vertical sections of the upper agitator so I did not break the blades. The agitator dogs were worn out and must be replaced. I took apart the timer and found many burned and etched contacts. I sanded them, but probably not enough. I did not inspect the air pressure tubing and air dome. The problems described above still happen. What have I missed? HELP!

Bert, Based on the information provided and all that has been done the issue is either the clutch and/or the gearcase assembly.

Eric, You have the correct timer installed in the washer. Recheck and make sure you didn't install the timer upside down. Then remove the timer knob and dial, slowly and carefully turn the timer shaft, until you hear a louder than usual "click"(this should be one of the "off" detents in the timer) install the timer dial so the pointer aligns to the off position on the panel and install and lock the timer knob in position.

Harold, It would be recommended to check to see what temperature that the unit is on when this happens. It could be that you have clogging of the water valve screens. Check to make sure that the pressure hose is not clogged with debris and that the air dome where the hose connects is clean. If these things check ok then the issue will most likely be in the temp switch part number 8564137.

Donald, This sounds like it would be an issue with the pressure hose getting clogged up or the air dome that the hose connects to. Check to make sure that they are clean and clear and if they are clean then this will be a pressure hose issue.

Howard for Model Number LSQ9110PW2

The washer fills, agitates, drains the soapy water and spins, but when it gets to the rinse cycle no water runs in. It just agitates with no water. I can reset everything and try to start back at a new wash but it still wont do anything but a slow agitate waiting for water to rinse before another spin. Based on another question here with the same problem and the answer saying to replace the water valve, I bought WP3979346 from you and installed it. This did NOT fix the problem. What next? Replace the timer?

1 Answer

Howard, With the unit agitating without water in it then this would either be a pressure hose is clogged or the pressure switch is faulty.

Fernando, Yes, the problem is most likely the timer. A "stuck" internal timer contact is the most likely fault.

Rob for Model Number LSN3000PW3

Have a Whirlpool LSN3000PW3 washer. when starting a load the washer fills with water then starts washing but then will stop doing anything after about 5 min on the timer. If I open and shut the lid or touch the timer knob it starts washing again. Lid switch and motor have been replaced about 5 mouths ago so there good. Is it the timer causing this? Also now just the other day no warm or hot water will fill into the tub with the temp knob in any setting. If i turn the cold water off and use casual wash cycle then warm water will come in. If the cold is turn on then no warm or hot water. What prevents the washer from filling with warm or hot water? Can the timer also affect this? thanks

1 Answer

Hello Rob. Yes, based on the information you provided, it sounds like the timer is bad and will need to be replaced.
