The Control Timer is an OEM replacement part specific to Whirlpool washers. It is the electronic component responsible for governing the sequence and duration of wash cycles. Located inside the control console, the timer works with the control dial to initiate various wash/rinse phases based on the selected settings.

Causes for timer failure may include water exposure corroding electrical circuits or repeated rapid switching wearing out internal switches.

Symptoms of a faulty control timer include:

  • Inability to advance through complete cycles
  • Random operation of rinse or spin functions
  • Premature termination of cycles before finishing
  • Failure to respond when turning the cycle selector

This OEM part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore models.

Hello Charles, You will want to make sure that the hinge is not loose or bent causing it to not fully make contact with lid switch. If the hinge is out of place and not making contact then this would be the cause of unit not operating. If the hinge is seating into the switch but still not running then the timer would be at fault.

Hello Willy, The lid switch WP8318084 has most likely failed. If it checks good electrically, this style has had some issues mechanically. If the plastic "loop" is broken, the switch won't "make" when the lid is down. Also, if the screws are loose in the hinges, it will adversely affect the strike. The timer will not be the issue since it would prevent the unit from filling with water. The only other component that would affect the units' running capability without stopping the water fill is the pressure switch WPW10231403.
