This is an electromechanical defrost timer that controls the automatic defrost cycle in a refrigerator. It periodically switches the compressor off and activates the defrost heater to melt frost buildup on the evaporator coils. Replace this timer if your refrigerator is not defrosting properly, frost is building up excessively on the back wall of the freezer, or the compressor runs continuously without cycling into defrost mode.

I replaced the Thermostat and Defrost Timer. It was a fairly easy repair other than removing the old Defrost Timer. The way the manufacturer, in this case, Amana, mounts that unit with "clips" is just poor design and engineering. It is virtually impossible to get the timer out without damaging the mounts. I had to do some creative rework to mount the new timer.
After 2 days, the fridge appears to be working properly with these new parts.
