Unplug fridge. Use a Phillips head screwdriver to remove the single screw underneath the display. Also under the ledge you will see two slots - one on each side of the forward part of the ledge. Insert a flat-head screw driver and twist (either way) to release the plastic tabs. Once the tabs release you can pull the whole thing loose. I read an article concerning the same problem and ordered the interior lever, but the real issue was that the plastic piece that activated the water flow was broken off the interior of the water dispenser cover assembly. I popped out the dispenser cover (it is on very snugly) and replaced it with a new one (again, it went back on but with some force needed). Had to replace the (assembly lever dispenser; AW3) unit because the ice and water paddles could not be bought separately. We used the AP5306646 Assembly Cover part to replace the dispenser portion of the unit. There is a video on YouTube where the person explains how to get the old unit out. It was 1 screw and then a pulling motion. It takes a little bit of strength and finesse but it came out like the video. The compressor was very hot and did not appear to be running. You could here a relay click on and off 15sec cycle. repeating every 2 minutes! Bought a new overload relay too repair, plus a new thermal protection switch because it was cheap. Both parts are actually located on the compressor behind a plastic cover.
