Turned off water behind the fridge. Unscrewed housing that covered water lines behind the filter base with a 1/4" socket. Pulled out the water hoses by pulling forward on the blue ring holding the hose while pulling the hose backward. Unscrewed the two screws below the filter base. Freezer won't start or compressor hums but doesn't run? A failed run capacitor is often the cause. DIY-friendly repair, typically done in under an hour.

Took a chance that was the problem (it was); ordered all new OEM parts, including a new timer and run capacitor (a part that kicks in every time the compressor starts). I received the parts at 1 PM EST; by 1:48 PM I had the freezer working. Easily saved $250.00. A nice aside was that an Internet competitor was asking $53.00 for the same... Read more

Once the defrosting began, the GFCI outlet would reliably trip. I took apart the shielding inside of the freezer and tested the defrosting without the heating element or the thermostat connected. Since that looked good, I tested for proper functionality of the thermostat by removing it, placing it in a working freezer, and checking... Read more
