Googled the symptoms and realized it was probably the Start Relay. To check, I unplugged the refrigerator, took off the back panel, and pulled the old start relay off. I shook it and it rattled, like something was broken inside. That was the sign that it did indeed need to be replaced. Looked up the part on www.appliancepartpros.com and found it. Kit was recently redesigned by manufacturer. Photo shows older design. Instructions included.
Ordered replacement kit from AppliancePartsPros. New part that was recommended did not look like the original (frig is a Maytag and new part comes in a Whirlpool bag). Chat support assured me it will work. Got it, and put it in per instruction, which was against my better judgement, as the top two wire colors were reversed on the instruction sheet, from what I had taken off.
